Orthodox church holidays in June 2018

Memorial Day of Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy

On this day, Orthodox believers remember the blessed Grand Duke Dimitry Donskoy, the hero of the Battle of Kulikovo.

Dmitry I Ivanovich, nicknamed Donskoy for his victory in the Battle of Kulikovo, is Prince of Moscow (from 1359) and Grand Duke of Vladimir (from 1363).

The name of Dmitry Donskoy has become a symbol of Russian military glory over several centuries. Having taken the throne at the age of 12, he devoted himself to the cause of unifying Russian lands and liberating Rus' from the Tatar-Mongol yoke. The victory in the Battle of Kulikovo on September 8, 1380, which is also called Mamaevo, or the Battle of the Don, brought particular glory to the prince. For this victory, Grand Duke Dimitri was nicknamed Donskoy.

Prince Dimitri died in 1389 at the age of 38. Canonized in 1988, the year of the celebration of the millennium of the Baptism of Rus'.

Celebration in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

Installed in memory of the rescue of Moscow from the invasion of the Crimean Khan Makhmet-Girey in 1521.

In 1521, the Crimean, Nogai and Kazan Tatars, led by Mehmet Giray, moved to Rus' and, devastating everything in their path, approached Moscow.

The attack was unexpected, the Russians did not have time to gather troops and everyone was afraid that the capital would be taken and ruined. The townspeople, led by Metropolitan Varlaam, began to frantically pray to the Mother of God for salvation. And she appeared in a vision to the khan, surrounded by a numerous formidable army - the heavenly forces themselves stood up for the Russian land and the Crimean Tatars fled from Moscow of their own accord.

The icon of the Mother of God is considered miraculous and, according to legend, was written by the Evangelist Luke on a board from the table at which the Holy Family ate: the Savior, the Mother of God and the righteous Joseph the Betrothed.

Day of Remembrance of the Saints Equal to the Apostles Tsar Constantine and his mother Queen Helena

Emperor Constantine the Great ruled the Roman Empire in the first half of the 4th century. In 313, he issues the Edict of Milan “On Tolerance,” where he ends the persecution of Christians and the Christian faith gains freedom.

Constantine did not leave ancient Rome, which was the center of a pagan state, as the capital of the empire, but moved his capital to the east, where the city of Constantinople was founded. Constantine was deeply convinced that only the Christian religion could unite the huge, heterogeneous Roman Empire. He supported the Church in every possible way, brought back Christian confessors from exile, built churches, and took care of the clergy.

Installed in memory of the supreme apostles Peter and Paul, who fasted in preparation for the Gospel preaching. Believers abstain from meat and dairy products, entertainment, and also try to devote more time to prayer and regularly attend worship services.

During this fast, unlike the more strict Lent, it is allowed to eat fish on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends.

Lent ends on the Day of the Apostles Peter and Paul on July 12, unless the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is on Wednesday or Friday.

Memorial Day of Saint Blessed Xenia of Petersburg

Xenia of Petersburg is one of the most revered Russian saints. Left a widow at the age of 26, she gave away all the property she and her husband had acquired and chose for herself the difficult path of foolishness for Christ's sake. Dressed in the costume of her deceased husband, Ksenia wandered around the St. Petersburg side all day long, and at night, regardless of the time of year and weather, she went to the field and stood here in kneeling prayer until the morning.

Another time, workers erecting a stone church at the Smolensk cemetery noticed that every night someone was dragging bricks for masonry onto the top of the temple under construction. For a long time they could not figure out who this tireless assistant was. It turned out that it was the servant of God, blessed Ksenia.

For her humility and deeds in the name of the faith of Christ, the Lord gave her the ability to gain insight into hearts and the future.

Blessed Ksenia died at the age of 71. And many miracles began to happen at her grave. The suffering received healings, broken peace was restored in families, the needy received what they needed.

When icon veneration was restored, Patriarch Ignatius was shown in a vision the place where the head of the Forerunner was hidden. There, in the indicated place, she was found for the third time.

After graduating with honors from the seminary and the Theological Academy in 1855, he was appointed to St. Andrew's Cathedral in the city of Kronstadt, where he served all his life.

Kronstadt was the place where various vicious people were expelled from the capital. In addition, many laborers worked there in the port. Almost all of them were poor, begging and drinking.

Father John was convinced that love and compassion can save any person.

“You need to love every person both in his sin and in his shame,” he said. “There is no need to confuse man - this image of God - with the evil that is in him”... With such a consciousness, he went to people, reviving them with the power of his truly pastoral compassionate love.

Father John enjoyed great love and fame throughout Russia.

Saint Theodore came from the city of Euchait (in present-day Turkey) and was a governor (in Greek - “stratelate”).
Many pagans, seeing his virtuous life and meekness, accepted the faith of Christ.
Emperor Licinius, co-ruler of Constantine, having learned about this, arrived in Heraclea and forced Theodore to worship idols. When Saint Theodore remained unshaken, the angry ruler ordered that the confessor of Christ be subjected to cruel torture.

Theodore was crucified on the cross, and at night an angel appeared to the martyr, took him down from the cross and completely healed him. The next morning, the servants of Licinius, sent to throw the body of Saint Theodore into the sea, seeing him completely healthy, believed in Christ. Many other pagans who saw the miracle of God also believed.

Having learned about this, Licinius ordered Saint Theodore to be beheaded, and he died in 319.

Orthodox worship and holidays

The soul is like a traveler crossing a shaky bridge. A helping hand is extended to her from the other shore, but in order to accept this help, the traveler must extend his hand himself. Such a hand, extended towards the forces of Light, is every good choice, every right deed and every bright movement of the soul, including prayer. This is the grain of the answer to the question: why prayer? And why worship? “Prayer” (see) is a solitary conversation of the soul with God or with the forces of Light that create for Him; this is also a state of tenderness, reverence and spiritual delight that covers the heart when contemplating the Beautiful, the High or the Great; this is also the catharsis through which inspiring works of art lift a person’s soul; this is also her participation in the cleansing and uplifting actions of the temple.
What is a ritual?
This is a sacred act, established on the basis of a person’s inner experience, for the sake of gaining help from supersensible light forces or for the sake of preventing hostile influences on him from supersensible dark forces.
What is a sacrament?
This is a sacred act during which the superconscious roots of the human will receive divine grace, that is, they are filled with strength to move towards harmony between the individual and the universe, spirit and flesh, man and the Divine.
Therefore, indifference of consciousness or lack of faith on the part of the one over whom the sacrament is performed does not deprive the sacrament of its effectiveness. Hence the possibility of performing sacraments over non-believers, seriously ill people and children. But the participation of reason and personal faith facilitates and accelerates the flow of currents of grace from the superconscious roots of the will into the sphere of daytime consciousness.

Sacraments of the Christian Church:
; ; ; ; - the sacrament of endowing a clergyman with divine grace through episcopal ordination - the blessing of the Lord; (wedding) - blessing by the church before God, sanctification of marital ties; .

Historically established worship includes:
1. daily cycle;
2. seven-day circle;
3. fixed annual circle;
4. moving annual circle formed around the holiday of Easter.

The most important public service in Orthodoxy is the Divine Liturgy (in Russia also called “liturgy”), during which the sacrament of the Eucharist is celebrated - the most important sacrament of the Church after Baptism, which constitutes its essence and without which it is unthinkable.

The liturgical year begins with the Week of Easter, which occupies a very special and exclusive position among the holidays.
(Easter) – April 28, 2019.

Twelfth holidays. In the liturgy of the Orthodox Church there are twelve great holidays of the annual liturgical cycle (except for Easter). They are divided into the Lord's, dedicated to Jesus Christ, and the Theotokos, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the time of celebration, the twelve holidays are divided into fixed (non-transitionable) and mobile (transitionable). The former are constantly celebrated on the same dates of the month, the latter fall on different dates every year, depending on the date of Easter.

Many citizens of our country consider themselves Orthodox Christians. They honor the traditions of their ancestors and celebrate Orthodox holidays. They will probably be interested to know what church holidays will be in May 2018.

Important church events in May

In the last month of spring, all Orthodox Christians will celebrate two very important holidays:

  • 05/17/18 - Ascension of the Lord;
  • 05/27/18 – Trinity.

In addition, there will be two days of remembrance of the dead:

09.05.18 Day of Remembrance of Dead Soldiers
26.05.18 Trinity Saturday

From 05.28.18 to 06.03.18, a continuous Trinity Week will take place. It is notable for the fact that there will be no need to fast on Friday and Wednesday.

Ascension of the Lord

This holiday is widely known to all Orthodox Christians in Russia. It is always celebrated on Thursday, so it occurs on the fortieth day from Easter Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on May 17, 2018.

In different places this celebration has different names:

  • Saved;
  • Spasov day;
  • Ascension Day;
  • Ascension.
  • In the church calendar it is listed as the Ascension of the Lord.

Very often it is associated with farewell to spring.
When this day is mentioned, some moments associated with this celebration are immediately remembered:

  • funeral bread;
  • solemn worship in churches;
  • "Heavenly stairs";
  • commemoration of the dead;
  • funeral pancakes, etc.

This day belongs to the twelve holidays and is celebrated not only in Russia, but also in Europe. This holiday reminds us of how the Son of God ascended to heaven about two thousand years ago. The New Testament describes this point in detail. As you know, the resurrected Jesus appeared before the eyes of his disciples more than once. When the fortieth day arrived, he asked them to gather in the ancient city of Jerusalem. In the presence of his apostles, he ascended again into heaven. True, after this, two angels descended from heaven, dressed all in white. They told the students that their teacher would definitely return. In fact, the Gospels of Mark and Luke tell us that Jesus told his disciples about his Ascension in advance.

Until the end of the fourth century, Trinity and Ascension were one celebration. Then these holidays were divided.

How the Ascension is celebrated

The holiday is celebrated for 10 days. Wednesday is called the day of forefeast. All churches perform the rite of commemoration of the Holy Resurrection. The service lasts all night. The clergy read the stichera of the Colored Triodion. In the morning, paremias from the Gospel of Mark are heard. The following days are called after-feast. In churches, priests glorify the Ascension of the Savior into heaven. On Friday the Ascension ceremony takes place. From Easter until Ascension, the clergy wear white robes.

Among other actions on this day, it is customary to remember the deceased. In Russia, there used to be a tradition - housewives made “heavenly ladders” from dough so that deceased relatives could more easily get to heaven. It was customary to bring them to the graves of their ancestors. Sometimes they were taken directly to the field. It was believed that this contributed to a good harvest. The ladders helped the grain rise to the sky faster.

Also in Rus' there was a tradition of baking “Christ’s Lapotki” - these are pancakes made in a special way. Ancient legends said that Jesus goes around all believers between Easter and Ascension. These culinary products were baked “for him.”

You are not allowed to work on Ascension. Usually believers go to visit or invite the closest people to their home.

Even on this day there was a tradition of helping the poor. It was believed that the Savior himself could walk under the guise of such people.

It was also forbidden to spit and litter, so as not to accidentally harm Jesus, who at that time was walking among living people under the guise of a beggar.

Day of the Holy Trinity

Also refers to the twelve feasts. It has a moving date and is celebrated on the fiftieth day from Easter Sunday. In 2018, the holiday falls on 05/27/18, Sunday.

This celebration has special features:

  • decorating homes with flowers, tree branches and field herbs;
  • special worship service;
  • blessing of water;
  • baking special flour products, etc.

The name of the holiday comes from an event that happened more than two thousand years ago. It was then that the Holy Spirit appeared before the eyes of the Virgin Mary and the apostles, declaring that Jesus is the Son of God. The Trinity is evidence that the Holy Spirit, God the Son and God the Father are one.

It was established in honor of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and the Virgin Mary on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday symbolizes the unity of the Holy Spirit, God the Father and God the Son.

As ancient manuscripts testify, on the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the mother of Jesus and his disciples. This happened in Jerusalem in the Upper Room of Zion. First, everyone present heard an extraordinary noise, then the Holy Fire appeared. After these events, the followers of Jesus began to be able to speak different languages. At the behest of God, this was done so that the apostles could carry Christian teaching to different peoples living on Earth.

How Trinity is celebrated in Russia

This holiday is celebrated for three days. Temples and homes of believers are decorated with green tree branches, meadow herbs and flowers. The clergy wear green clothes, which personify life-giving.

Church services begin on Saturday and continue throughout the night. On Trinity itself a solemn liturgy sounds. The third day is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. During the service, the water is blessed.

Parishioners dry the blessed branches, flowers and herbs and use them as a talisman throughout the year.

On Trinity days, in addition to churches, Christians must visit the graves of their ancestors in order to treat the spirits.

Before the holiday, general cleaning is done. Housewives decorate their homes with a variety of greenery and prepare festive dishes. Among them there must be a loaf, which should bring prosperity and well-being to the house.

After the church and cemetery, it is time for folk festivities. First, family, relatives and friends gather around a round table to congratulate each other on the Trinity and taste the hostess’s festive dishes. After the meal, the people go outside into nature, where they dance and sing ritual songs. In some places it is customary to light a fire at this time.

On this day, healers collect herbs. These days they are believed to have special healing properties.

Even on Trinity Day, it is customary to tell fortunes. Young girls perform all sorts of rituals and tell fortunes about their future life and groom. In doing so, they use collected herbs and tree branches.

On Trinity you cannot:

  • work and do household chores;
  • sew, wash and cut hair;
  • swear and quarrel;
  • swim in natural reservoirs. They say that these days there are mermen, mermaids and other evil spirits there.

Church fasts in June 2017

June includes not only Orthodox celebrations, but also fasting - days when a believer consciously renounces worldly joys, temptations and idle dishes.

During such a period, it is necessary to spend as much time as possible in prayer, reevaluate your life and ask forgiveness from the Lord for various sins. Such a pastime allows you to get closer to God and hope for his favor.

Apostolic Fast (Peter's Fast). This is a multi-day fast that falls in June. It starts on June 12 and lasts until July 11. In Orthodoxy, Peter's Fast is not considered strict.

More about holidays

Or Pentecost is one of the most revered and beloved holidays for all followers of the Orthodox Church. The Holy Scripture says that on the fiftieth day after Easter, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven to people, who proved the trinity of God’s essence. On this day, people rush to visit church, repent of their sins and ask for forgiveness from the Lord.

This holiday is widely known among Christians and has been celebrated since time immemorial. It’s no wonder that throughout its existence it has acquired many traditions, customs and rituals. Some of them have survived to this day and are religiously performed by modern church people.

Let's look at some of the most significant traditions of the Trinity:

  • It is mandatory to decorate the house with flowers, herbs, tree branches, in particular birch branches. People believed that such “bouquets” could protect the house from evil interference and troubles. At the end of the holidays, the branches were burned on a fire, thereby carrying away all the sorrows and sorrows of the family along with the ashes and smoke.
  • A visit to the church, where believers listen to festive chants in honor of this great summer celebration.

In addition to traditions, there are also quite interesting rituals that allow you to righteously have fun on Trinity and even predict a person’s fate. We are talking about weaving wreaths.

For a long time, girls who dreamed of getting married successfully wove wreaths from wild flowers, went to the river and let them go with the flow. The one whose wreath floats farthest and does not sink will marry a good, respectable man first.

The discovery of the head of John the Baptist - the third discovery falls on this date (as we know, there were only three of these acquisitions). A festive liturgy is held in churches; Orthodox Christians celebrate this great event with a small feast.

Let us note that Peter's fast begins in June, established in honor of two saints: Peter and Paul. It is not strict, but still provides for some restrictions on nutrition, entertainment and other pleasures of life.

People who try to adhere to this fast believe that it is easily tolerated due to the fact that it falls in the summer - a period when fruits and vegetables can adequately replace various cereals, meat and other products.
