It is this question that arises from the reader when he first learns about their meeting. But let's not rush. Before Andrei met Natasha, the author first introduces the hero to us in the salon of Anna Scherer, during a fascinating conversation with a friend - Pierre Bezukhov. Thanks to this episode, the reader can conclude that for the protagonist life in court society is disgusting and oppresses him with its "boring". Andrey believes that the people around him are interested only in gossip, balls, their own pride and vanity. Bolkonsky, in a conversation with Pierre, claims that such a life does not suit him, he wants change, which is why he goes to war. Having not yet comprehended the real truth of life, the character dreams of fame, exploits, the attention of his idol and ideal - Napoleon.

He is waiting for his "Toulon". And only the Battle of Austerlitz could completely turn Bolkonsky's worldview, forcing him to understand that life is not built on a thirst for glory, life is love for loved ones, this is life for the sake of a wife, children, parents, friends ... Unfortunately, life is merciless in her lessons, and she did not bypass Andrei - Princess Liza died during childbirth. Immediately tormenting thoughts about the meaninglessness of existence, about the frailty of life, about the uselessness of hopes for happiness fell upon the prince, which gives rise to an inner emptiness in him, forcing him to think that life is over.

It is at this turning point that she appears - Natasha. The first meeting of the heroes took place in Otradnoye, where the heroine arrived on matters related to guardianship. Andrei manages to hear how childishly Natasha is surprised and discusses the moonlit night and its beauty, and this young girl begins, without knowing it, to conquer the heart of the young prince.

Gradually Natasha began to take root in Andrei's life, the conversation by the oak tree, the first ball, the first dance - all this convinces Bolkonsky that life goes on and his happiness is still waiting in the wings.

But, as I said, life is merciless in its lessons - the wedding is postponed for a year, Andrei leaves for the front, and Natasha goes to Kuragin. Bolkonsky's loneliness, aggravated by this event, and disappointment descend upon the hero.

Love flashed in the heart of physically and mentally wounded Andrei at the moment when mortally wounded, Bolkonsky, by some miracle, meets Natasha and her new chosen one, whom, to my surprise, he forgives.
