We will consider the process of making a folding table made of wood with our own hands. The master must have a minimum set of woodworking machines and fixtures, a small workshop, certain skills in performing various carpentry works and a great desire. During manufacturing, only hardware, varnishes and accessories are bought in the store, everything else will be done by hand.

Step 1. Make a rough drawing of the table. Decide on the specification and the amount of materials needed. Our worktop is made of furniture board, work begins with its manufacture.

Practical advice. If you do not want or do not have the opportunity to manufacture furniture panels on your own, then you can buy it in the store. But you must be prepared to lose a significant amount of money.

In addition, it is quite difficult to choose a shield for the size of the table; a large amount of expensive material remains unclaimed. It is very problematic to use it in the future, and it is a pity to throw it away. So these segments will lie around in the workshop for a long period of time, take up space and create problems.

Draw a sketch of the future furniture board with all dimensions. We will glue the shield according to the simplest method on a smooth fugue. The strength for the countertop is quite enough, and the technology does not require great skill and the availability of very complex woodworking machines.

Practical advice. If your thickness gauge allows you to process only narrow lumber, then the shield will have to be made in two parts. Make one, then another, then pass them on the thicknesser, position them with dowels or dowels and glue them together. Using the same technology, you can make furniture panels of any size on small machines.

Step 2 Scatter a 50 mm thick board on the slats on a circular saw. The size of the rails is 20 × 50 mm.

Align the side edges, generously spread PVA glue on both sides, pull off the first shield with clamps and leave it until the glue dries completely. Use the same technology to make a second shield.

Step 3 In turn, pass the workpieces through the thickness gauge, make them ideally the same thickness.

Practical advice. Do not use a thin wooden lath for the dowel, it has very low fracture strength along the fibers.

Plywood has several veneers placed along and across the fibers, due to this, strength indicators are significantly increased. How to correctly position the plates on the plane?

Make wooden lamellas with a thickness of 6 mm and a length of 30 mm, they will be inserted into special grooves at a distance of about 10 cm. It is very important that the direction of the fibers in the lamellas be perpendicular to the direction of bending, we have already mentioned above what this is connected with. If you are making lamellas from a thin rail, then cut off the workpieces perpendicular to the axis.
Put a 6mm thick cutter on a hand router, fix the shields with clamps on the work table and prepare the grooves.
Coat the sides with wood glue, slide the slats into place and press them firmly into place. You have to finish the details with a mallet so that there are no traces, always use linings from unnecessary pieces of boards.

After the glue dries, it is necessary to slightly grind the surfaces and align the joints.

Step 1. With a circular cute, carefully align the ends of the shield and give it the required dimensions of the countertop. At this stage, there is still room for minor adjustments.

Step 2 Mark the location of the wedge. It is required to stabilize the plane of the countertop from negative deformations. Bends can be caused by long-term static loads, hinges, screws, etc. Wedges are made from a 20x30 mm bar. First, select a quarter on the circular on both sides, and then make a dovetail with a router.

The milling cutter can do these operations in one pass, but such work heavily loads the engine, causes it to overheat, and there are risks of a short circuit. It is better to lose 5-10 minutes of time, but keep an expensive router in working condition. It is recommended to round the edges of the visible part of the wedge with a chamfer, this improves the appearance of the product.

Step 3 Prepare the end of the shield for connection to the wedge. First you need to go through a router with a straight cutter and remove the main part of the wood. Then change to a wedge tool and make a wedge connection.

Important. It is necessary to mill under the ruler, fasten it with clamps.

At one end of the tabletop, the selection is not through, but deaf. On the wedge, also adjust the connection profile with a knife.

Step 4 Insert the wedge into place, the excess end must be cut off. The part is fixed with the help of an ordinary dowel. Now the tabletop will not bend, a flat plane will remain for the entire period of operation of the table.

Trim the ends, chamfer the edges. It is possible only on non-working ones, so the area of \u200b\u200bemphasis increases. But professionals recommend chamfering on all faces in order to increase the safety of using the mechanism.

The length of the device is limited by the width of the countertop. It cannot exceed half of its width, otherwise the ends of the supports in the folded state will protrude beyond the perimeter of the table. This is a very important limitation, keep this in mind while sketching.

It is important to remember that the frame must be made of dry lumber, which eliminates the violation of linearity during operation in dry rooms. To increase the strength of the connection, the nodes can be additionally tightened with self-tapping screws. Some of them must be recessed and covered with slats, and some can be left in their original form, the heads under the table are invisible.

To the upper plane of the frame, you can fix a 5 cm wide bar on the lamella; when the table is folded, it looks like a shelf and can be used as a stand for various decor items. When the table unfolds, the shelf increases the size of the tabletop. The shelf has another function - it makes a place to install a folding support.

The support is screwed with piano hinges to the vertical post of the supporting frame. It must be installed not in the center of the bar, but on one of the edges. Self-tapping screws are screwed in the center, due to this, the fixation strength increases, the probability of cracking of the vertical part is significantly reduced.

Practical advice. At the bottom of the shelf, you need to make a selection to facilitate the movement of the support during the opening / closing of the table. The recess is made with a manual milling cutter with a straight cutter, a depth of about 1–2 mm.

Surfaces are re-sanded with sandpaper, it is necessary to achieve maximum cleanliness. The table is covered with at least two layers of high-quality varnish. After the first time, the raised pile is removed. The thickness of the varnish on the countertop should be approximately one millimeter, each layer can be applied only after the previous one has completely dried.

Now it remains to fix the tabletop to the frame, do this with the help of piano hinges. Screw the finished structure to the wall in a pre-selected location. The height from the floor depends on the purpose of the folding table.

Practical advice. If your worktop is quite large, then it is necessary to install two supporting support frames. They are mounted along the edges of the tabletop and, when opened, each becomes under its own side of the table. Due to this arrangement, the strength of the structure is significantly increased, and the maximum length of the support triangles is doubled.

And the last. Despite the most advanced ways to support the tabletop, the structural strength is much lower than that of traditional four-leg tables. You can’t stand with your feet on the folding one, you must constantly control the load. It is not recommended to keep it unfolded for a long time.
