Steve wai is the best. Biography. What is the difference between the new CD and the rest

Steve Vai was born in New York on June 6, 1960. Among all the musical abundance he had access to, he was most impressed by the art of guitar aces such as (Jimi Hendrix) and (Led Zeppelin). Fate gave him an invaluable gift - in the same school that Steve attended, he already studied decently with a guitar ( Joe satriani), the future guitar hero. So Steve Vai's first guitar teacher was none other than Joe Satriani. Steve was fanatically devoted to the instrument, and at the age of 18, having played in several local rock bands, he became a student at the renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston. To this day, he recalls with gratitude his parents, who always supported his passion for music, paid for private lessons from the last money, and so that he could finish his studies at Berkeley, his father sold his life insurance policy. Steve Vai showed great promise not only in practice, but also in music theory. While still mastering the wisdom of school, he undertook to make arrangements for several guitar compositions (Frank Zappa), technically incredibly complex. He sent a copy of one of his works to the author. Zappa was so delighted with the arrangement of "Black Page" that after meeting Steve personally, he invited Steve to join his band.

So Steve Vai became a full-fledged member of Frank Zappa's team, in which he was called either a magician guitarist or a little Italian virtuoso. He accompanied Zappa on several international tours and recorded for his albums in the early 80s. Vai's guitar can be heard on "Tinsel Town Rebellion" and "You Are What You Is" (1981), "Ship Arriving Too Late" (1982), "Man From Utopia" (1983), "Them or Us and Thing Fish" (1984).

It is not surprising that Frank Zappa's work left an indelible mark on Steve Vai's soul, and when he took his own road in the mid-80s, Zappa's presence was noticeably felt in his first solo attempts. Not finding financial support from the recording companies, Steve Vai recorded the first two discs at home on a studio tape recorder and published at his own expense. Released in 1984, "Flex-Able" and "Flex-Able Leftovers" showed the musician's passionate temperament and characteristic humor, which gave his recordings a special charm. As for the guitar technique, the lessons of virtuoso Joe Satriani were the most obvious.

In 1985, Steve Vai became the lead guitarist of the band Alcatrazz, replacing the departed (Yngwie Malmsteen). Vai's company Alcatrazz recorded the album "Disturbing the Peace", which was ignored by the public. In the same year 85, the musician made his film debut in the already cult film "Crossroads". He was entrusted with the role of a guitarist who sold his soul to the devil, who, according to the plot, does not withstand a guitar duel with Ralph Macchio, explodes and shatters into pieces.

Meanwhile, Vai's close friend bassist Billy Sheehan invites him to try his hand at the backing band of singer David Lee Roth, who was just starting out. solo career after leaving Van Halen. After playing with the group on live shows, in 1986 Vai participated in the recording of Roth's debut album "Eat" Em & Smile, which becomes one of the most significant hard rock albums of the year. Finally, Steve Vai's performing talent, like his colleagues in to Billy Sheehan's team, they are in the spotlight of music lovers and professionals alike, and the most prominent guitar publications in the world name them in the list of the best musicians of 1986.

Despite the fact that the quartet clearly had a great future, Sheehan did not stay long in it. He left immediately after the release of Lee Roth's second album, "Skyscraper" in 1988. This disc was much more active in exploiting the spectacular techniques of pop music, but nevertheless became another hyped rock hit. This time Steve Vai accepted compliments not only as a guitar virtuoso, but also as a co-producer of the album, on which he worked in collaboration with the vocalist. In the same year, Vai made his debut in another new field for himself - developing a new line of luxury guitars. The Jem 777 series instruments he created are manufactured and sold by Ibanez.

In 1988, another initiative of Steve Vai dates back to the year, not directly related to his musical career... Together with Richard Pike, he founded the Make a Noise Foundation, a charity that helps talented children and teenagers from underprivileged families acquire instruments and receive musical education.

In late 1988, when Roth's "Skyscraper" promo tour came to an end, the guitarist faced a serious choice. On the one hand, he had accumulated enough material for a solo album, on which he began to slowly work. On the other hand, he was lured into their ranks in every possible way by the metallers Whitesnake, who were at the peak of their popularity. He finally accepted this offer. His first and last album with Whitesnake, "Slip of the Tongue", came out in 1989, and soon the musician took up his own album. A year later, the guitarist presented a new solo album "Passion & Warfare" (1990). Remaining romantics at heart, Steve Vai filled his compositions with dreams and fantasies that worried him as a teenager. His inspiration and emotionality, not to mention his virtuoso playing technique, found a response in the hearts of many people. As an instrumental album, "Passion & Warfare" was a huge success, reaching the Top 20 of the US pop chart and going gold in its first week of release. The album was nominated for a Grammy and collected a whole collection of awards and high-profile titles awarded to it by the largest music publications. For example, "Guitar Player" and "Guitar World" magazines named Steve Vai the best in 4 categories each, including the best rock guitarist of the year. British metal weekly "Kerrang!" named him "Guitarist of the Year", and the British magazine "Select Magazine" recognized the musician not only as the best musician in general, but also as the sexiest man.

Fanatically devoted to his art, rapidly expanding the vocabulary of rock guitar, the musician once again confirmed his reputation as one of the top guitarists of the 80s. He also had a decisive influence on the performers of the next generation, the children of the post-grunge era. 90s guitar idols James Shaffer of Korn, Mike Eizinger of Incubus, Tom Morello of Audioslave unanimously name Steve Vai as their main idol and teacher.

Soon, the musician completed the creation of another instrument - his own seven-string guitar Universe 7-String, on which he worked under a contract with Ibanez. Although at first the instrument enjoyed very modest demand, its time came in the mid-90s. Steve Vai's guitar came into vogue when guitarists from metal bands such as Korn or Limp Bizkit began using seven-strings to achieve an ultra-low sound.

After long doubts and hesitation, Steve Vai finally decided to assemble his own rock band in the usual sense of the word. He called her simply - Vai. The young vocalist Devin Townsend, bassist T.M. Stephens (T.M. Stevens) and drummer Terry Bozzio (Terry Bozzio). The quartet managed to work actively in the studio only once - on the first and last joint album "Sex & Religion", which appeared in 1993. When there was no longer any doubt about the complete failure of the album, Steve Vai disbanded the group and continued his traditional instrumental excursions.

A new mini-selection of his new compositions was published in 1995. The EP was called "Alien Love Secrets". A whole series of solo recordings followed. In 1996, the album "Fire Garden" was released, in 1998 - "Flex-Able Leftovers" (reissue of his second album, which had not been replicated for many years, supplemented by several tracks), in 1999, the solo album "The Ultra Zone" was released. ... At the same time, in the late 90s, the roads of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani crossed again. They have kept friendly sympathy for the rest of their lives, and now they decided to join forces for greater effect, going on a joint tour every year. Their show programs, called G3, featured other guitarists, someone new every year. In 1997, the very first tour was documented on the live album "G3: Live in Concert".

Steve Vai entered the 21st century active and full of new ideas. In 2000, a collection of his best guitar ballads "The 7th Song: Enchanting Guitar Melodies Archive" appeared. The secret of the name and selection principle is very simple. On all his albums, published over 20 years, the seventh number has always been a guitar ballad. These songs may have seemed out of place on original recordsbut put together they sounded amazing.

In 2001, the guitarist released the first long-play of all-live material "Alive in an Ultra World", which he considers the pinnacle of his conceptual ideas. The numbers presented on the album were created, rehearsed and recorded during a world tour in 32 countries of the world. Each song on the album is dedicated to a different country and is inspired by its musical culture. This release was followed by an impressive ten-disc retrospective "The Secret Jewel Box" set. In 2002, the musician collected compositions written at different times for the cinema under one cover. There were as many as 40 tracks, including a guitar duel from the movie "Crossroads" and the title theme for the tape "Bill and Ted" s Bogus Journey. The collection was called "The Elusive Light and Sound Vol. one".

One of the most ambitious projects that the musician has managed to accomplish is a special performance accompanied by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. The program included an electric guitar concert "Fire Strings" written by the distinguished Japanese composer and concert pianist Ichiro Nodaira. According to the guitarist, learning a 20-minute passage for an atonal electric guitar was the biggest challenge of his professional life. "It was almost impossible to play, so I took it on to learn 'Fire Strings'," says Steve Vai.

Until now, we have hardly mentioned the musician's studio collaboration with his many contemporaries. Meanwhile, Steve Vai has participated in sessions for a huge number of artists and bands. Among the most interesting are the albums "Gregg Bissonette" and "Submarine" by Gregg Bissonette, "Hey Stoopid" by Alice Cooper, "Funk Me Tender" by Randy Coven, "Infinite Desire" by Al DiMeola , "Symphony 1" by Joe Jackson. Steve Vai left a particularly noticeable mark on the releases of Frank Zappa. His guitar can be heard on Zappa's "Jazz From Hell" and "Shut Up" N Play Yer Guitar albums, on several CDs from the "You Can" t Do That on Stage Anymore "series, and on Zappa's Universe Concert Tribute. ".

It was the album "Zappa" s Universe "that brought Vai the first Grammy - for the best performance of instrumental rock on the track" Sofa ". And getting the second Grammy - already as the best producer - was due to his own label Favored Nations, on which in 2001 the best pop instrumental album of the year "A No Substitutions: Live in Osaka" was released, produced and mixed by the label owner himself.

And in his free time from this crazy schedule, Steve Vai is engaged in ... beekeeping. Breeding bees is his lifelong dream, which he fulfilled in the late 90s, when he bought himself a house and started five bee colonies. Also a good source of income in case of a complete collapse of the music business ... However, this is not expected. If it happens that Steve Vai somehow stops playing, he can always earn money as a composer. To begin with, it will be possible to simply disassemble the rubble of already written and not yet performed pieces that have accumulated over 25 years of a happy romance with music.

"The greatest miracle I know is when a strange, extraordinary sound is born in my head and I manage to translate it into reality using the musical means at my disposal," Steve Vai admits. that no one else has succeeded - that's what interests me the most. " Drawn by the irresistible curiosity and passion of a pioneer, Steve Vai grew up into a real magician of the six-string guitar of the 80s, an inimitable virtuoso and creator of unique sounds.

In 2004, some of his compositions and orchestral arrangements, including previously recorded parts, were performed in the Netherlands with the Metropole Orchestra in a concert series entitled "The Aching Hunger". In 2003, drummer Jeremy Colson joined Vai's band, replacing previous drummer Virgil Donati. Vai's last album, Sound Theories, was released in 2007.

Steve Vai released a DVD of his performance at The Astoria in London in December 2001, featuring bassist Billy Sheehan, guitarist and pianist Tony McAlpin, guitarist Dave Weiner and Australian drummer Virgil Donati.

In February 2005, Vai presented the Ibanez guitar with two necks (electric and classical), called The Blossom Suite, along with classical guitarist Sharon Isbin at the Châtelet Theater in Paris. In 2006, Vai played as a special guest guitarist alongside fellow former members of Frank Zappa's band, drummer Terry Bosio, guitarist-singer Ray White and saxophonist-singer Napoleon Murphy Brock on the Zappa Plays Zappa tour led by Zappa's son Dweezil Zappa, to Europe and the US, and a short US tour in October.

On September 21, 2006, Vai made a special performance at Video Games Live at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California. He sang two songs from the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra: "Halo Theme", and the second song was the song for the world premiere of the trailer for Halo 3.

Steve Vai appeared at the London Guitar Show on April 28, 2007 at the ExCeL Center. At the end of April 2007, Wai confirmed the release of his latest album, "Sound Theories", scheduled for June 26th. Released a two-CD set consisting mainly of previously released material, re-recorded by Wai (he rewrote the arrangements) and performed with a symphony orchestra. Wai says that the project was a great joy because he considers himself a composer more than a guitarist, and he is happy to see the music he has composed well performed by the orchestra. A DVD followed the album, but it was not released until the end of that year. Steve appeared on Dream Theater's "Systematic Chaos" album, on the song "Repentance". The appearance was vocal, not instrumental, as Vai was just one of the many guest musicians on this track. The song features many musicians whose goal is to apologize to important people in their lives for mistakes made in their past. On August 29, 2009, he appeared on stage with Dream Theater at the final show of their "Progressive Nation" tour at the Greek Theater, where he performed an improvised jam with other members of the band.

When Steve picks up the guitar, the magic begins. Anyone who has seen his performances live knows how intense they are, how much of a true "factory" they have. When you listen and see Wei, "you kind of believe him," because even a fool can see without binoculars - energy and sensuality come from the very soul of the musician. The guitarist's gypsy appearance attracts and repels at the same time (yes, a rocker should be somewhat nasty). Steve's eyes are in constant contact with the audience, and what his hands and body are doing at this time is difficult to describe. The guitar (Ibanez Jem) obeys him unquestioningly, whether he caresses it with his fingers or torments it with his tongue.

Steve Way (June 6, 1960) is a native of Long Island. He began taking guitar lessons back in the mid-70s from some dude named Joe Satriani. Steve came to the first lesson with a guitar and strings. "I didn't even know how they were pulled." 3 years were not in vain: having taken the best from his teacher, Wei developed his own style (which, most likely, talent is to blame). The friendship of Steve and Joe is getting stronger and develops, the guys have toured together more than once and plan to jam more than once. But all this will still be.

In the meantime, eighteen-year-old Steve appears in the band of the late Frank Zappa, struck down by the filigree refinement of the young guitarist's playing. He called Way "a young Italian virtuoso". Subsequently, the guitar threw Steve into many rock bands, most famous for his "shooting" in the group of David Lee Roth (2 albums), Alcatrazz (1 album) and Whitesnake (1 album). One cannot fail to mention the participation in the recording of Alice Cooper's disc Hey Stoopid. Well, working for Ozzy Osbourne can be considered just pampering. “We wrote so much music together that we just wanted to take and release a whole album, but difficulties began with Ozzy's company, and the project had to be abandoned. I wrote very difficult things then, Osborne still recorded one of them, and the rest is waiting for better times. Still, working with Uzziah is great. He's the funniest and most cheeky dude in the world. And besides, he is a rock 'n' roll guy to the core. Don't forget, he made heavy metal. "

Don't think, however, that Steve only worked for the uncles. His talent was fully revealed in solo works. 5 albums in 12 years, perhaps not so many, but what albums! The latest masterpiece "Fire Garden" was released in September 1996 and was marked not only by the seal of the master, but also by long tunes, both with his team and in conjunction with the bands of Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. Steve's joint project with composer and conductor Joel Tome is also interesting. In the same September, they performed in a joint meeting with a 60-member orchestra commanded by Tome. The guys have a long-standing love for Frank Zappa, whom both consider to be their spiritual father.

Wei, like many of today's rock artists, is actively working for the cinema. His best work (both acting, composing and performing) I think is the movie "Crossroads", where Steve portrays a bad guy named Jack Butler who sold his soul to the Devil for the title of best guitarist. Although along the way, Wei's hero loses in a musical duel to a young white bluesman (actor Ralph Machio), it is hard to believe that such a “pretzel” can blow through. Unfortunately, there is no soundtrack for the film in the form of a separate CD, but how DEVIL Wei is good there! For those who have never seen him on stage, I highly recommend finding a video and watching it. Everything that this person lives and breathes is in 15-20 minutes on the screen.

By the way, despite his damn appearance, Steve is a pretty decent person, he is a vegetarian, he does not use alcohol and drugs. "As a child, I smoked marijuana, and during my school years I was addicted to alcohol. I was especially involved when I played with the" big "teams. But now it's all over. I have nothing against my friends who eat meat and consume alcohol and nonsense, if only it didn't go to the limit. "

Well let healthy image life leads Steve to the very heights of Rock Olympus. Moreover, he devotes most of his life to his music, and if God exists for him, then he has the shape of a guitar. "I like musicians who work to become virtuosos, those who combine inspiration and creativity with hard work. I myself am the same, and therefore I do not care about these grunge artists who make millions only on the image, but they themselves do not know how to play But if they are successful, may the Lord bless them. " Well, Way himself named bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer John Bonham and vocalist Freddie Mercury as ideal partners. Like this.

Stephen Vai (06.06.1960), a native of New York, USA, is a famous virtuoso guitarist, who has also realized himself as an actor, composer, vocalist and producer. He began his career as a guitarist in 1980 with Frank Zappa. Since 1983 he has been acting as an independent solo guitarist. The inspirations for guitarist Steve Wai were Jimi Hendrix and Jimi Page. Guitar playing Steve Vai was fortunate enough to learn from Joe Sartiani himself, who later became a guitar legend.

The creative path of Steve Vai

Steve Vai in his youth

By the age of 18, guitarist Steve Vai became a student at the famous Boston School of Music, Berkeley. By the time he entered, he had already tried to play in several rock bands. Steve brilliantly mastered not only practical lessons in playing the guitar, but also quite successfully mastered the theory of music. He prepared arrangements for several compositions by Frank Zappa. The arrangement for the track "Black Page" made an overwhelming impression on Frank, and he invited Steve to become a member of his group. The sound of Steve Vai's music is present on the albums "Tinsel Town Rebellion" and "You Are What You Is", "Ship Arriving Too Late", "Man From Utopia", "Them or Us and Thing Fish".

In 1984, the first independent projects, Flex-Able and Flex-Able Leftovers, were created, in which Joe Satriani's playing technique was manifested and a significant influence of Frank Zappa was felt.

In 1985 Steve Vai played with the band Alcatrazz as lead guitarist. The jointly recorded album "Disturbing the Peace" did not make much impression on the listeners. In the same year, Steve made his film debut in the movie "Crossroads".

In 1986 he tried himself in the backing band of David Lee Roth together with bassist Billy Sheehan. They participate in the recording of the album "Eat" Em & Smile ", which was a significant event in the world of hard rock. During this period, music critics recognize Stive Vai's talent and include him in the lists of the best musicians. For many years Steve Vai has been considered by many to be one of the best guitarists on the planet. And this title is largely justified. For over 20 years, Vai has been a “trendsetter” for the entire guitar world. His unique playing style is admired by the most sophisticated guitarists, and his concerts always attract full houses.

Steve got his first guitar at the age of 12. The school teams who got together for fun sparked a real passion for the instrument in him. The course of the young fighter Wai took place at the world famous Berklee College of Music, from where, having acquired sufficient knowledge and technical skill, he got into his first real rock band - the Frank Zappa band. From this moment, Steve Vai's path to world fame begins. In the 80s, he worked with such legendary rock bands as Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake. Public Image Limited.

However, Steve felt cramped within the traditional song format of rock and roll. In 1990, Vai completely switches to a solo career, and in 1992 gathers his first own team. From now on, any of his concerts is a great guitar show with world-class musicians.

Vai is impossible to predict. Steve doesn’t allow himself to perform routine concerts with predictable staging. Each number of the program is an original stage action - these are various special effects, and a demonstration of amazing examples of guitar mastery, and sparkling humor when communicating with the audience. The release of each new Steve Vai album is accompanied by a huge stir all over the world. Each time, the musician presents surprises: either a double live album recorded during a world tour (Alive In An Ultra World), or a fragment of a musical and poetic fable with a complex philosophical concept (Real Illusions: Reflections).

In June 2007, the guitarist's new album was released, recorded during joint concerts with the Dutch Metropol orchestra. On this double disc, Steve appears not only as a virtuoso guitarist, but also as a composer of orchestral music.

Steve Wei is rightfully considered one of the most prominent guitarists of our time. Born on June 6, 1960, Steve tried organ at the age of six and mastered the accordion at ten. Young Wei got acquainted with his main instrument at the age of 13, and since then nothing else has existed for him except the guitar. The teen's idols are Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper. Wanting to master the playing technique perfectly, Steve began to take lessons from local guitar guru Joe Satriani. After studying with him the allotted time, Wei entered Boston's "Berklee School of Music". As a student at this institution, Steve undertook to dissect the most complex guitar compositions from the repertoire of Frank Zappa. One of these pieces, "Black Page", was taped by him and sent to the famous avant-garde artist. Frank was so impressed by the talent of the young boy that he immediately invited him to his group.

Wei spent with this company from 1980 to 1984 and participated in the creation of such albums as "Tinsel Town Rebellion", "You Are What You Is", "Ship Arriving Too Late", "Man from Utopia", "Them or Us", "Thing-Fish". In 1984, the guitarist decided to pursue a solo career and with his savings recorded the program "Flex-Able" (the remnants of the sessions were included in the EP "Flex-Able Leftovers"), where strong Zappa influence was felt.

In 1985, Steve received an offer from Graham Bonnet to take a guitar position at Alcatrazz. Wei recorded one LP with them, after which a new engagement awaited him. This time Steve was lured away by his friend Billy Sheehan to join David Lee Roth's team. The alliance turned out to be very successful, and after the multi-platinum "Eat" Em & Smile "photo of Way flashed on the covers of music magazines. Steve's authority grew so much that together with the company" Ibanez "he organized the release of his own series of guitars" Jem 777 ". Made with Lee Roth Another hit album, Wei began recording his second, mostly instrumental solo album. At the same time, the musician managed to work in "Whitesnake" on "Slip Of The Tongue." On "Passion & Warfare" Steve embodied youth dreams in music gold and confirmed his status as an outstanding guitarist.

After a long hiatus, the musician with Devin Townsend, T.M. Stevens and Terry Bozzio organized a project named after himself ("VAI"), with which he released the disc "Sex & Religion". This metal album was significantly different from the previous work and was received by both critics and the public rather cool.

Having abandoned team experiments, since 1995 Steve began publishing solo records. At first he returned to pure instrumentals on the EP "Alien Love Secrets", but then he discovered good vocal abilities, and on the albums "Fire Garden" and "The Ultra Zone" about half of the pieces were numbers with voices. In 1997, the musician took part in the three-guitar project "G3", releasing a live album "G3: Live In Concert" with him. Wei released his own live in 2001. "Alive In An Ultra World" was made on the basis of national motives of the countries that the guitarist has visited during his touring trips. In addition to this album, at the beginning of the new millennium, Steve released a collection of instrumental ballads "The 7th Song" and a retrospective box set "The Secret Jewel Box". Another studio work appeared in 2005, and on "Real Illusions: Reflections" Wei tried to create something like a concept (as much as possible in the instrumental genre) and even came up with the genre of "rock fairy tale".

"Illusions" was followed by a tour with "Metropole Orchestra", as well as the release of a double live "Sound Theories", in which Steve's songs were played in orchestral arrangements. Another zinger, "Where the Wild Things Are", went on sale in 2009, but the seventh full-length film, continuing the "Real Illusions" line, was released with a seven-year interval.
