Lord Vader. Star Wars: Why Darth Vader Wasn't a Real Villain. After learning about his children, he planned to betray the emperor

After the enchanting release of the first part of the fantastic epic Star Wars, the image of Darth Vader became an idol for young people of several generations. In 2017, the producers of "Star Wars" have an anniversary - exactly 40 years have passed since the TV viewers got acquainted with the fate of Anakin Skywalker.

Story

Darth Vader, whose real name is Anakin Skywalker, is a character in the Star Wars franchise. Darth appears in the film as the main villain responsible for the conspiracy, and the hero's past in the form of Anakin Skywalker and the story of the apostasy play a major role in the prequel's narrative.

The character was designed by an American film director and implemented on screen by several actors. He appears in six episodes of Star Wars, in Rogue One. Star Wars Tales and is mentioned in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Vader is a protagonist in the universe of the Star Wars television series, video games, literary works, and comics.

Originally prophesied by the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side and became a servant of the negative Galactic Empire in order to balance the Force. Vader became the father of Luke Skywalker and his twin sister Leia, secret husband of Padmé, and grandfather of Kylo Ren.

George Lucas, "father" of Darth Vader

Darth Vader has become one of the baddest villains in popular culture and is even included in the list of the greatest villains ever made. According to the American Film Institute, Darth Vader ranked third in the ranking of the greatest villains in the history of the film industry over the past 100 years out of hundreds of scoundrels and scum, losing the lead positions to Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. However, other film critics consider Vader to be a tragic hero, as his motives are initially for the greater good, before turning to the dark side.

Image

Darth Vader is originally a 9-year-old boy played by Jake Lloyd. Other actors worked in the rest of the saga.

In Attack of the Clones, Anakin Skywalker finds himself "strangled" by Kenobi and has no control over his life. When he transforms into Darth Vader, every negative act he does destroys any hope or connection to his former life, making it difficult to reach the light.

At the same time, Vader is forced to put on a suit designed specifically for him. The main element of the costume is the most complex mechanism that provides breathing - it caused a specific sound when the hero enters and exhales. Without his special mask, Vader did not appear on the screen again.

As a result, Vader returns to the side of good and redeems himself by sacrificing his life in order to save his son and destroy the Emperor. The deceased character was buried along with the costume, following the traditions of the Jedi.

Movies

In the first series of Star Wars, the tall, grim Vader is already close to his final image, and the main character Anakin Skywalker resembled Luke Skywalker, who appeared in later series.

After the success of the original Star Wars in 1977, director Lucas Jr. hired science fiction author Lee Douglas Brackett to co-write the script for subsequent installments. At the end of 1977, the script for the next part was ready, strongly reminiscent of the last film, except that Vader is presented not as Luke's father, but as a teacher.

In the first draft of the script, written by Brackett, Luke's father appears as a ghost luring Luke to the side of evil. George Lucas did not like the script, but Brackett died of cancer before the director could discuss the remarks with her. With no screenwriter, Lucas had to write the next project himself. In the new script, the director applied a new plot twist: Vader claims that he is Luke's father.

The new plot twist about Luke's origin had a major impact on the film. Michael Kaminsky (author of a book on the history of the creation of Star Wars with elements of the biography of George Lucas) argues that such a plot twist was not seriously considered or even considered until 1978, and the first part of the film was filmed under an alternative plot, where Darth Vader acted a separate character, not Luke's father.

When writing the drafts for the second and third series, which introduced a different storyline, Lucas reflected a new backstory that he himself came up with: Anakin went to Kenobi's apprenticeship, had a son, Luke, but was seduced by the side of evil. Anakin fought Kenobi at the volcano, getting seriously injured, but was then reborn as Darth Vader. Kenobi hid Luke on the fantasy planet Tatooine when the Galactic Republic became an Empire and Vader hunted and destroyed the Jedi. This character change became the springboard for the development of another plot, "The Tragedy of Darth Vader", which underpinned the film's prequel.

In deciding to create a prequel, Lucas indicated that the episode would be tragic, depicting Anakin's defection to evil. He assumed that the prequels would be the beginning of a single story that began with Anakin's childhood and ended in death. It was the final step towards turning the series into a saga.

In the first prequel, George Lucas introduced Anakin as a nine-year-old child to make the hero's separation from his mother sharp and painful. Trailers for the Anakin movie, and a movie poster showing him casting Vader's shadow, hinted at the character's possible fate to unsuspecting viewers. Ultimately, the film achieved its goal of showing Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader.

Michael Kaminsky in The Secret History of Star Wars provides evidence that problems with Anakin's defection to the side of evil prompted Lucas to make major adjustments to the story, first by revising the original sequence of the third prequel so that Anakin would destroy Count Dooku, which served as the first step towards the transition to side of evil.

After completing the bulk of the work in 2003, Lucas again made changes to Anakin's character, rewriting the transition to the dark side: Anakin's transition from grace to the Dark Side is now caused by the desire to save his wife Padmé, while in the previous version this reason was one of several, including that Anakin believed the Jedi were planning to take over the Republic. These fundamental adjustments were made by editing key shots and adding new scenes filmed during pickups in 2004.

Darth Vader is first introduced in Star Wars as a ruthless cyborg in the service of the Galactic Empire. He is tasked with recovering the classified Death Star engineering designs stolen by the Rebels with Tarkin. Vader captures and tortures Leia, who concealed the plans inside the droid and sent it to find Kenobi. By placing a tracking device aboard the Millennium Falcon, Vader is able to track the Rebel base. As the Jedi attack the Death Star, Vader attempts to bring down Luke, but Han Solo intervenes, allowing Luke to destroy the Death Star.

David Prowse played Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars movies.

In The Empire Strikes Back, Vader becomes obsessed with finding Luke. In a conversation with the Emperor, Vader convinces him that Luke can be lured to the dark side. Vader lures his son into a trap and wins the duel by ripping off his arm. Vader reveals to Luke that he is his father and asks for help in overthrowing the Emperor so they can rule the galaxy together. Terrified, Luke flees, and Vader telepathically tells his son that it is his destiny to turn to the dark side.

In the next installment, Vader and the Emperor oversee the creation of a new Death Star. Vader brings Luke to the Emperor and threatens to lure Leia (Luke's sister) to the side of evil if Luke does not comply. In a fit of rage, Luke defeats Vader and rips off his father's robotic arm. The Emperor orders Luke to kill his father and take his place. Luke refuses, and the Emperor tortures him with the power of lightning. After hearing Luke's pleas for help, Vader kills the Emperor; but he himself is mortally wounded.

After asking Luke to remove his mask, a redeemed Anakin Skywalker tells his son that he is fine before he dies. Luke escapes the Death Star with his father's remains and solemnly burns them at the stake, the Spirit of Anakin reunites with the spirit of Obi-Wan and Yoda to watch over Luke and his friends as the Rebels celebrate the destruction of the Death Star and the fall of the Empire.

Lucas then made a prequel trilogy, which tells the backstory and reveals the image of Darth Vader. Anakin first appears in the Prequel Trilogy in Episode I, which takes place 32 years before the original Star Wars. The young slave Anakin lives on the planet Tatooine with his mother Shmi. Anakin was born without a father and has the ability to foresee the future. In addition, the young man is a talented pilot and mechanic who built his own droid C-3PO. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn encounters Anakin after an emergency landing on Tatooine.

Qui-Gon senses Anakin's strong connection to the Force and becomes convinced that the boy is the "Chosen One" of the Jedi prophecy who will bring balance to the Force. Then Anakin is forced to leave Shmi and go to study with the Jedi. During the journey, Anakin falls in love with Padmé, the young queen of Naboo. Qui-Gon asks the Jedi Council for permission to train Anakin, but they sense fear in the boy and refuse. In the end, Anakin helps prevent the Trade Federation from invading Naboo. After Qui-Gon is killed in battle with a Sith spirit, Obi-Wan promises to train Anakin.

In Star Wars: Episode II - "Attack of the Clones", Anakin becomes Obi-Wan's apprentice. Anakin travels with Padmé to Naboo. But after feeling the pain of Shmi's mother, Anakin goes to Tatooine to save her, but is too late. Anakin, enraged, kills the Tuskens responsible for his mother's death and returns to Lars' estate to bury Shmi. By the end of the film, Anakin, having lost his arm in a fight with Count Dooku, is equipped with a robotic arm and secretly marries Padmé.

In Star Wars: Episode III - "Revenge of the Sith", Anakin becomes a Jedi Knight and hero of the Clone Wars. He and Obi-Wan led the mission to rescue Palpatine from the Separatist commander General Grievous aboard their ship. When the Jedi confronts Dooku, Anakin defeats the Sith Lord and, following Palpatine's persuasion, kills him in cold blood. They rescue Palpatine and return to Coruscant, where Anakin learns that Padmé is pregnant. Anakin has a vision where Padmé is dying in childbirth and tries to prevent it.

Palpatine tells Anakin that the dark side has the power to cheat death and eventually reveals that he is the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Although Anakin informs the Jedi Windu of Palpatine's betrayal, he follows Windu to make sure Palpatine is alive. When he realizes that Windu wants to kill Palpatine, Anakin intervenes, allowing Palpatine to kill Windu.

Desperate to save Padmé, Anakin turned evil and became Palpatine's apprentice, Darth Vader. On Palpatine's orders, Vader must kill all the Jedi and Separatist leaders who are hiding on the planet Mustafar, Padmé confronts Vader and begs him to return to the side of good, but Vader refuses. When Obi-Wan disembarks from Padmé's ship, Vader accuses his wife of conspiracy and uses the Force to strangle her into unconsciousness and rage.

After a vicious battle, Obi-Wan defeats Vader, injuring his legs and arm, and leaves the body on the banks of a lava river where it burns. Palpatine finds Vader and brings him back to Coruscant, where his mangled body is treated and covered in the black armored suit first seen in the original trilogy. When Vader asks for Padmé's whereabouts, Palpatine explains to him that he killed Padmé in anger; Vader cries out in agony, his spirit broken.

  • Eric Bui, a psychiatrist at the University of Toulouse Hospital, argued that in the American Psychiatric Association's convention, Anakin's personality is characterized by six diagnostic features of borderline personality disorder, which constitutes a basis for the diagnosis. Bui argues that Anakin Skywalker is a useful example for demonstrating borderline personality disorder to students.

  • Anakin's origins in The Phantom Menace are compared to an African-American identity, and dissatisfaction with life is compared to Siddhartha before he became Gautama Buddha.
  • In 2015, the statue of Vladimir Lenin in Odessa was remade into Darth Vader due to the decommunization law.

AT Episode 1: The Phantom Menace Anakin's mother, Om, said he didn't have a father, though I thought she doubted that.

Is there a canon answer, who is Anakin's father? If yes, then who?

Daniel Bingham

Under the rule that there are no prequels, this question remains unanswered. Anakin has a father, we just didn't introduce him ;)

Ferruccio

It will be revealed in a future film that Luke travels back in time to the planet Roswellooine and becomes his own grandfather.

Richard S

Well its obvious, look at his nose, he is Roman :)

Also, although Darth Plagueis made an attempt to influence the midichlorians to create the Ultimate Sith weapon alongside Darth Sidious, the experiment was ultimately a failure, and the midichlorians, sensing the Sith's inherent malevolent intent, not only refused to do so, but in response conceived Anakin Skywalker. to destroy the Sith once and for all.

So, according to this, neither Darth Plagueis nor Sidious are Anakin Skywalker's father, the midichlorians actually conceived him without any outside direct intervention.

Jared

An article over in secrethistoryofstarwars (to take this link with a pinch of salt, I have no idea how "canon" this is), stating the early work of the Rotten Tubers script was actually Darth Plagueis "manipulating the midichlorians" to create life, thus creating Anakin .

Michael Brown

Palpatine turns to Annakin and says, "Annie, I am your father", so the circle is complete.

Robert Brim

Shmi specifically states that there is no father. Later conversations between the Jedi, it is usually to be concluded that the midichlorians created Anakin in Om to bring the balance back into effect.

She never claimed to be a virgin when he was conceived, so don't assume it was a virgin birth, so there was never a biological father.

aslum

I would say that a birth without a father is practically the same as a virgin birth. The notable quality of a birth is the absence of a father, not the amount of sex the parent had.

When writing phantom menace, the answer wasn't really planned by George Lucas as it was just repeating the story of Jesus Christ.

But in the first draft Revenge of the Sith when Palpatine tries to lure Anakin to the dark side and the young Jedi finds out that Palpatine is actually a Sith Lord, Palpatine tells him that he was the one who orchestrated his mom's death,

In the same script, there is no mention of Darth Plageuis, but Palpatine tells Anakin that he adopted him through midichlorians to his mom.

DavRob60

This is interesting information, but since it's from the first draft, it was never made into the final script and is refuted by a later post, it can't be considered Canon. But still interesting information (+1).

Arc Vile

Who contradicted? George Lucas? Lucas Films? Consumed by the universe?

DavRob60

Expanded Universe, Star Wars: Darth Plagueis novel.

Arc Vile

Ouch! So you're more likely to "believe" something from the expended universe than what Lucas originally had... good!

Gobernador

@Arc-Vile See starwars.wikia.com/wiki/.... Your first project falls under N-Canon, not G-Canon, since the project was a "cut from canon" by Lucas. Books are C-Canon.

Douglas

The canon "answer" is that in itself the force caused by Anakin be understood without explanation, as to the biophysics involved. IMO it was ACCEPTED so Shmi just announces in episode I that Anakin didn't have a father, that she got pregnant w/ the benefits of intercourse (bad Shmi, for all that grief and the work she deserved at least one night of fun) , These are echoes of the "miraculous" conception of Jesus Christ. Likewise, following the scenario of Episode I does not rule out a biological father for Anakin, but does not provide any hints as to the identity of said father.

Ann

In the first movie Phantom Menace, when Anakin Skywalker is a boy, his mother says he has no father. I thought Darth Maul - could Darth Maul be Anakin's father? It seems that when Anakin becomes a Sith as Darth Vader, his son Luke fights him. Maybe father and son fight or feel each other in these films? Perhaps Anakin's mother knew that Anakin's father turns to the dark side and becomes that Sith in the first movie.

Nellius

Sorry, but Darth Maul already has a well-established backstory. Also, he's not human, he's a Zabrak, so he couldn't be Anakin's father.

Anakin Skywalker

However, Anakin took the first step to the Dark Side of the Force long before these events - when on Tatooine he exterminated the entire tribe of the Sand People, avenging his mother Shmi Skywalker. Anakin's next move to the dark side of the Force was to kill the unarmed Count Dooku on the orders of Chancellor Palpatine. And finally, he took the decisive step when he betrayed the Jedi Master Windu and helped Palpatine defeat him.

Suppression of the Rebellion

Darth Vader commanded the military forces of the Empire. The rebels sometimes mistook him for the Leader of the Empire, but forgot about the Emperor. He instilled fear in the entire galaxy. Thanks to the brutality of his operations, the rebels had a hard time. In general, he is indirectly guilty of the beginning of the war: while still a Jedi Knight, he foresaw the death of his wife and, of course, did not want this. Darth Sidious, aka Palpatine, was then the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic and used this to lure Anakin to the dark side. After Anakin became Darth Vader, Order No. 66 came into force, after which most of the Jedi Knights were destroyed, and the Grand Army of the Republic, in accordance with the charter, came under the direct control of the Supreme Chancellor. During the rebellion, Vader played the role of a target to be eliminated by the rebels, as well as a deity for the Empire. He acted without miscalculations and misfires. Vader was a war genius. Any miscalculation on the part of subordinates was severely punished by his favorite measure of torture - strangulation at a distance. Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, unlike the other Sith, had full access to the Jedi data archive. At any moment, they could look at the dossier on any Jedi or event. Due to his punitive functions and unconditional devotion to the Emperor, he commanded the respect of his soldiers, and among the rebels he received the nicknames "The Emperor's Chain Dog" and "His Majesty's Personal Executioner".

Darth Vader

In the original Star Wars trilogy, Anakin Skywalker appears under the name "Darth Vader". He was played by bodybuilder David Prowse and two stunt doubles (one of them - Bob Anderson), and the voice of Vader belongs to actor James Earl Jones. Darth Vader is the main antagonist: the cunning and cruel leader of the army of the Galactic Empire, which rules the entire galaxy. Vader appears as a student of Emperor Palpatine. He uses the dark side of the Force to prevent the collapse of the Empire and destroy the Rebel Alliance, which seeks to restore the Galactic Republic. On the other hand, Darth Vader (or the Dark Lord) is one of the greatest figures in the Star Wars universe. As one of the most powerful Sith, he is well liked by many fans of the anthology and is a very charismatic character.

New Hope

Vader is tasked with recovering the stolen Death Star plans and finding the Rebel Alliance's secret base. He captures and tortures Princess Leia Organa and is by her side when Death Star Commander Grand Moff Tarkin destroys her home planet of Alderaan. Soon after, he fights with lightsabers with his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has come to the Death Star to save Leia, and kills him (Obi-Wan becomes a spirit of the Force). He then meets Luke Skywalker in battle on the Death Star, and senses in him a great ability in the Force; this is confirmed later when the youth destroys the battle station. Vader was about to shoot down Luke with his TIE Fighter (TIE Advanced x1), but a surprise attack Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han Solo, sends Vader far into space.

The Empire Strikes Back

After the destruction of the rebel base "Echo" on the planet Hoth by the forces of the Empire, Darth Vader sends bounty hunters (Eng. bounty hunters) in search of the Millennium Falcon. Aboard his Star Destroyer, he executes Admiral Ozzel and Captain Niida for their mistakes. Meanwhile, Boba Fett manages to locate the Falcon and track its progress to the gas giant Bespin. Finding that Luke is not on the Falcon, Vader captures Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO in order to lure Luke into a trap. He makes a deal with Cloud City administrator Lando Calrissian to turn Khan over to bounty hunter Boba Fett, and freezes Solo in carbonite. Luke, who at this time is undergoing training in the possession of the light side of the Force under the guidance of Yoda on the planet Dagoba, senses the danger that threatens his friends. The young man goes to Bespin to fight Vader, but is defeated and loses his right hand. Vader then reveals the truth to him: he is Luke's father, not Anakin's killer, as Obi Wan Kenobi told the young Skywalker, and offers to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy together. Luke refuses and jumps down. He is sucked down a garbage chute and thrown towards Cloud City's antennas, where he is rescued by Leia, Chewbacca, Lando, C-3PO, and R2-D2 on the Millennium Falcon. Darth Vader tries to stop the Millennium Falcon, but it goes into hyperspace. Vader then leaves without saying a word.

Return to the Light Side

The events described in this section take place in the film"Star Wars. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi »

Vader is tasked with overseeing the completion of the second Death Star. He meets with Palpatine aboard the half-completed station to discuss Luke's plan to turn to the dark side.

During this time, Luke had nearly completed his Jedi training and learned from the dying Master Yoda that Vader was indeed his father. He learns about his father's past from the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and also learns that Leia is his sister. During an operation on the forest moon of Endor, he surrenders to Imperial forces and is brought before Vader. Aboard the Death Star, Luke resists the Emperor's call to unleash his anger and fear for his friends (and thus turn to the dark side of the Force). However, Vader, using the Force, penetrates Luke's mind, learns of Leia's existence and threatens to turn her into a servant of the dark side of the Force in his place. Luke gives in to his rage and nearly kills Vader by chopping off his father's right arm. But at that moment, the young man sees Vader's cybernetic hand, then looks at his own, realizes that he is dangerously close to the fate of his father, and curbs his anger.

Vader's costume design was influenced by the costume worn by Lightning, a villain in the television series Fight the Devil Dogs, and Japanese samurai masks, but Vader's armor was also similar to that of the Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Death.

The canonical Vader breathing noise was created by Ben Burtt breathing through an underwater mask with a small microphone in the regulator. He originally recorded many variations of breath sounds, from rattling and asthmatic to cold and mechanical. A more mechanical version was mostly chosen, with a more rattling one in Return of the Jedi, after Vader was fatally damaged by Sidious' Force lightning. Vader was originally intended to sound like an emergency room, with clicks and beeps as long as he was in the frame. However, it turned out to be too distracting, and all this noise was reduced to only breathing.

One of the canon changes regarding the costume was that by 4 ABY, Vader's left shoulder was completely artificial, and in 3 ABY, after an encounter with Luke on Bespin, he noted that his right shoulder had healed well. Because the bionic shoulder was unable to heal, Vader's right shoulder must still have been made of his own flesh, although earlier on Mimban, Vader's right arm was amputated from the shoulder. of his Episodes, we see how Anakin Skywalker first lost his right arm below the elbow (in a fight with Count Dooku (replaced by a prosthesis in the same Episode 2)), and then lost his left arm below the elbow, and both legs below the knee (duel with Obi-Wan ), which were also replaced with prosthetics at the end of Revenge of the Sith, during Anakin's final transformation into Darth Vader. However, whether Vader spoke of this healing literally, sarcastically, or metaphorically is unknown. Another change was that in Episode III, Vader's costume, which was brand new, was made different from the original design, albeit only slightly, to give it a new, newly created look. Several small changes to the length of the neck and shoulder grips gave Vader's movements a more mechanical feel. Another change in canon is that Vader's chest panel changed slightly from III to IV and from IV to V and VI. The canonical reason for this has not yet been named. In addition, this control panel had ancient Jewish symbols, which, according to some fans, translate as "His deeds will not be forgiven until he deserves it."

The suit has been referenced several times in the Expanded Universe. For example, in the Star Wars: Legacy comics, Cade Skywalker appears wearing a pair of pants that look very much like part of Vader's outfit. Also in Star Wars: Unite, when Mara tries on wedding dresses, one of them looks like Vader's armor. Leia tells the designer that the reason Mara rejected him is "The bride doesn't want to dress like the groom's father".

Criticism and reviews

This character is one of the most famous pop idols among the villains in the history of cinema.

... the presence of the disease explains the popularity of Vader's character among teenagers. It is noted that young people see a kindred spirit in Darth Vader, as young viewers themselves often suffer from borderline personality disorder.

“Ahsoka… Ahsoka, why did you leave?” Where were you when I needed you?
- I made a choice. I couldn't stay.
- You're selfish.
- Not!
- You left me. You let me down! Do you know what I've become?

His appearance on the screen precedes the "Imperial March" by John Williams. His appearance inspires horror and awe. His name resounds throughout the galaxy. One of the most famous villains in all of cinematic history, the central and highly controversial character in Star Wars. When you watch the saga in order, the finale of the third episode becomes a bit of a shock. Especially for those who once heard something about Darth Vader somewhere, but did not watch the original trilogy. The Rebirth of a Noble Jedi Anakin Skywalker into the powerful Sith Lord Darth Vader - this is perhaps the brightest emotional component of the story.

The films do not fully reveal either Anakin or Vader. To better understand the complex inner world of the hero, you should pay attention to the animated series Clone Wars (Anakin), Clone Wars (Anakin) and Rebels (Vader, appears in the second season). And of course - to the expanded Universe, consisting of a variety of books and comics.

The Inner World of Anakin and Vader

"You don't give up on feelings, Anakin. They make you special."
("The Clone Wars", season 4, episode 16.)

These words of Palpatine, addressed to the young Jedi, perfectly convey the essence of Skywalker. It was feelings that always led Anakin through life. He was a man capable of completely immersing himself in both love and hate. To curb emotional impulses, he needed a real, understanding friend. Unfortunately, in the end, there was no such thing next to him. Obi-Wan, who seemed to sincerely love Anakin, gradually fenced himself off from him by the rules of the Jedi. There was never any real trust between them. That is why the teacher not only missed Anakin’s internal torments, but also could not understand in time that he needed something more than the duty censure of the mistakes made, did not see the moment when the wayward student had to be put in his place as a father as harshly and soberingly. A past as a slave left Skywalker with a legacy of independence. Strength and talent have become the causes of excessive conceit and pride. Anakin was too young and inexperienced to handle himself on his own. And with spiritual losses that followed one after another, fear for the closest people to whom he was attached with all his heart. Close people - it was these attachments that ultimately killed Skywalker and saved Vader.

“He was bold. Rarely lost. But people were amazed by his kindness. He treasured his friends very much and protected them to the end.”
(Ahsoka on her teacher, Rebels, season 2, episode 18.)

Anakin's mom. As a little boy, he picked up and left a wounded Tusken raider, not even suspecting that in the future he would hate his entire tribe - it was the raiders who kidnapped and killed his mother. Mom died in Anakin's arms - this pain never left his heart: “Why did she die? Why didn't I save her? I know, I had to! .. I will learn how to make people not die!

Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite frequent mutual misunderstandings with Obi-Wan, Anakin did not hesitate to rush to his aid in the most risky situations. Even though he already doubted the Jedi, he never left him in trouble. There was a moment in their lives when Kenobi, for maximum credibility, hid the staging of his death from his best friend, but how much mental anguish this performance cost Anakin! For him, they were more than brothers, they were one...

Ahsoka Tano Anakin's first and only Padawan. They developed a wonderful, very warm brother-sister relationship. Ahsoka's character, independent and at the same time not alien to affections, was very reminiscent of Skywalker himself. Subsequently, after being falsely accused of betrayal, she became disillusioned with the Jedi Order and left it. To meet again face to face already with Darth Vader - and in this battle, having recognized each other, they could not deliver decisive blows. "I'm close to wanting to get away from the Order," Anakin said before Ahsoka left the Order. "I know". Only later, with bitterness and a great sense of guilt, did she realize how much her departure contributed to Anakin's transition to the dark side of the Force - she was needed by someone who always believed in her and asked to stay.

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine- the wise mentor of the boy, in many ways replacing his father. He was always ready to listen, understand, explain. The only person with whom you could talk about the most intimate, who never dismissed Anakin. Neither the Jedi Order, nor Obi-Wan, nor even Padme could give Skywalker the attention he needed as Palpatine. Anakin loved and unconditionally trusted Palpatine - but very soon ceased to have these feelings for Darth Sidious.

Padme Amidala- the love of Anakin's life, so strong that for the sake of his beloved he was really ready for anything. Dreams of her death became an obsession, the horror of the inevitable loss of the dearest person pushed her to look for a way to change the future. She believed in Anakin, but she didn't have enough time to get him back.

Luke Skywalker- a son whose existence Vader did not learn about until 20 years after his birth, living all these years with the thoughts that he had killed both his wife and his child. Luke, who believed in his father's bright side, was able to bring Anakin back. In this he is fundamentally different from Obi-Wan, who, despite his worries and regrets, did not fight for his second "I", but accepted the existence of Darth Vader as a given.

From Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader

“What is the use of strength if there is no discipline? The boy is as dangerous to himself as to his enemies."
(Count Dooku in Matthew Stover's book Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.)

While still a Jedi, who did not even think about switching to the dark side of the Force, Anakin sometimes did things that were unacceptable from the point of view of the Order. Some of them can be understood and even justified (as you know, sometimes all means are good to achieve the goal), but this does not change the essence - each such act dangerously brought him closer to the fatal line. And one of the first such steps was a cruel revenge for the death of my mother. From the piercing feeling of losing a loved one, Anakin succumbed to anger and despair unacceptable for a Jedi.

General Skywalker was known for his reckless bravery and military talent. But he also differed from others in his methods of interrogating separatist henchmen. The result was important to him, and therefore he even used his famous suffocation by the Force at a distance during interrogations. Skywalker's entourage suspected methods contrary to the principles of the Jedi, but turned a blind eye to them every time: apparently, it suited that there was someone who was not afraid to do all the dirty work. Everything was comfortable for everyone, until one day it touched them personally.

Another such unworthy act was the beheading of an unarmed Count Dooku. Anakin doubted the correctness of this act, but the dark influence of Palpatine was already becoming stronger than the Jedi teachings.

In fact, there were more such episodes. If we add to all this the periodic exacerbation of the sense of superiority cultivated by Palpatine, the desire to act as independently as possible and the general emotionality of Skywalker, then it becomes clear what an explosive mixture his soul sometimes represented.

Was it possible to stop the process of going to the dark side? Haunted by nightmares about the death of his beloved, the young man came to Yoda for advice. But could advice satisfy a tormented soul by simply letting go of its attachments? Didn't the sage's standard answer look like an excuse? In fact, everyone turned away from Anakin: distrust, fear of his Force, unwillingness to understand the complex inner world of his ward and help him cope with his passions in time - this is the reaction of the Jedi Council to Skywalker. And Palpatine was there again. Gave hope. Got rid of fear. Made me feel the power. At what point did Anakin put an end to his doubts? Kneel before a new teacher? Becoming a cold-blooded killer? Or allowing selfishness, albeit for a while, to take precedence over love? After all, even taking the path of Darth Vader, Skywalker experienced several moments of bitter regret. And if Kenobi had behaved precisely as an understanding and faithful friend, if he had not intervened in Anakin's conversation with Padme, then it is likely that even then Anakin would have been able to return to the bright path. The most important external manifestation of belonging to the dark side of the Force is the color of the eyes - in the moments of complete immersion in Darkness, it changes to yellow. For Anakin, this most clearly happened only after the fight with Obi-Wan. It was the hatred for the former teacher, the sizzling physical and mental pain that became the last decisive link in the chain of internal metamorphoses. "You were my brother!" exclaims Kenobi, looking at the defeated Vader, but is he sincere in his words? Did he himself at that moment become simply a machine for carrying out the orders of the Jedi Council? How could that former Obi-Wan leave his beloved friend, with whom he spent so many years side by side, to whom he owed his life more than once, to die in wild torment in the flames of lava?

“A Jedi is obliged to discard such attachments from his life,” and Kenobi followed this teaching. Did he ever realize that he had actually betrayed, without even trying to save? ..

Life of Darth Vader

The films show little of the daily life of the dark lord, but fans can learn a lot from the stories of the same expanded universe.

It becomes clear that Darth Vader never became the most powerful Sith in history - crippled, completely dependent on his suit, he lost a significant part of the Force. The suit, on the one hand, had impressive technical functionality (magnetic feet, explosion resistance, the ability to use it as a space suit, etc.), on the other hand, it was so ill-conceived that Vader could only explain its appearance by the unwillingness of the emperor to give him complete freedom. Poor-quality metal alloys, an extremely vulnerable life support panel, constant annoying hissing of the breathing apparatus, heaviness and sluggishness, pain when moving ... In addition, Vader began to suffer from claustrophobia and therefore developed special pressure chambers where he took off his helmet and meditated. He dreamed of learning to breathe on his own, to restore his lungs destroyed by the heat of the lava by the Force, but he could only last a few minutes without the apparatus. By order of the Emperor, Vader lived in a tower on Mustafar, the place where Anakin lost everything. Hatred and heartache were, according to the Emperor's plan, to spur Vader's dark Power. To escape from constant memories, he took various psychotropic drugs, but again and again returned to the past, which made him regret his choice. After all, there, inside the suit, was still Anakin - a man of tragic fate. His life is a story that even a kind and selfless soul can make mistakes. That love can bring not only happiness, but also pain. That you can be lonely and misunderstood in a crowd of people, some of whom call you their friend. That good is not always completely light, and evil is dark. That in every person there are always both sides, and the outcome of their struggle depends only on him. A story about how easy it really is to mess things up.

Revenge of the Sith

Anakin Skywalker went on about the chancellor, who promised to teach him the techniques of the dark side and power over death, which made it possible to save the hero's wife from death. Since in a dream Anakin saw his wife dying.

On 19 BBY, Skywalker revealed the Chancellor's identity to the Jedi Council and, disobeying orders, followed the Masters, who wanted to arrest Palpatine.

In a fight to the death, Palpatine was nearly killed by hand, but was saved by Skywalker, who disarmed the Jedi. This fatal act, in which Windu died, made Anakin feel the greatest sense of guilt. His spirit was broken and he embraced the dark side without hesitation, becoming Darth Sidious' apprentice.

Upon joining the Sith Order, Anakin ceased to exist, becoming the legendary Darth Vader.

"Now get up... Darth Vader!"

Anakin becomes Darth Sidious' apprentice

An excellent manipulator Palpatine, convinced Vader that the Jedi are traitors and traitors who must be destroyed.

Taking command of the 501st Legion, the hero attacked the Jedi Temple, killing absolutely everyone, including masters and young younglings. This attack on the Temple was the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge.

"Do what you must, Darth Vader. No hesitation, no mercy"

Having completed the task, Sidious gave Vader a new assignment - to end the Clone Wars and bring peace to the Galaxy by killing members of the Separatist Council on the planet Mustafar.

Arriving on Mustafar, Vader easily made his way into the meeting room, where he killed every single one. The most recent to be killed was Nute Gunray (Viceroy of the Trade Federation), an ally of Sidious who attacked Naboo 13 years ago. After Gunray's death, all droids were disabled.(The Empire used only clones).

Although Vader still had doubts, he convinced himself that everything he did was for the good of the Republic (naive Anakin).

Returning to his ship, Vader saw the approaching ship of Padmé, who was deeply upset by the massacre at the Temple. He tried to convince her that the one who wants to turn his wife against her husband is to blame for everything. Padme asked to fly away with her, but Vader insisted on the opposite, dreaming of overthrowing Sidious in order to take his place.

When Vader saw his former master Kenobi hiding on Amidala's ship, he thought that his wife had betrayed him and used a power grab on her. Filled with hatred, Vader engaged Kenobi in battle.

The duel of the great masters was long and ended on the banks of the lava river. Vader was so confident in his abilities that he attacked the Jedi from a bad position without hesitation. As a result of this, Dart ventured both feet and left arm. Shouting words of hatred towards Kenobi, Vader's body caught fire.

Obi-Wan left a former apprentice to die.

Vader's body was burned in half, but he supported himself with the Force and hatred. Darth Sidious came to the aid of the student. Vader was rushed to Coruscant where his damaged body parts were repaired. To increase his anger, Sidious ordered the student to remain conscious while the operation was in progress. He began to look more like a cyborg than a human. It contained the technologies that were used to create the .

When Vader asked about Padme, Sidious lied that he killed her in anger, after which the hero destroyed the droids with the help of the Force and damaged the premises. Vader's sole purpose from now on was to serve his master.

Terrible wounds and psychological trauma robbed Vader of most of his strength, potential and changed his character completely. Wearing the new heavy armor, Vader was clumsy and his mask limited his vision, forcing him to change his fighting style. Sith considered himself incomplete, stuck in tight armor that caused bouts of claustrophobia.

In the service of the Emperor

With no more purpose in life than serving his master, Vader became the second man in the Empire. He had a personal palace on Coruscant. Darth's personal soldiers were stormtroopers of the 501st Legion, who were called "Vader's Fist".

Vader carried out the tasks of Sidious, attracting large forces to the side of the Empire. His main task was Order 66, which was to find and destroy the remnants of the Jedi.

Leaving the past forever, the Sith changed the color of his sword to red.

In one of the first missions, Vader was sent by Sidious to Mercana to deal with clone commandos who refused to kill fellow Jedi. In this mission, the Sith were attacked by the Jedi Bol Shetak, who attempted to protect the commandos. In this duel, only thanks to the power, Vader managed to win. Vader himself considered this mission a failure, as he missed two more Jedi Roan Shrine and Oli Starstone.

The master's complaints about his own weakness led Sidious to send him to the Jedi Temple, where Vader was supposed to remember the massacre he committed there. Instead, the Sith hit memories and from that time on, he could no longer be in places that reminded him of the past: Naboo and Tatooine.

Vaidr's next victim was Fang Zar, a senator who had taken refuge in Bail Organa's palace. Although Sidious wanted Zar alive, Vader accidentally killed him. This was the second failure of the lord, for which he received a reprimand.

Weakness drove the Sith crazy. He wanted revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was responsible for this. When the Lord found out about the possible location of the Jedi, he went there. On Kessel, where Kenobi was supposed to appear, Vader was trapped by eight Jedi. The first two he killed with a sword, the third was strangled with a powerful hand. The pressure of the Jedi left the Sith without an arm, with a damaged leg, but Vader continued to fight until the soldiers of the 501st Legion came to the rescue.

Returning to the Emperor, Vader learned that Sidious had spread rumors about the destruction of 50 Jedi by an apprentice, in place of 8 with the help of clones (so Vader's greatness is far-fetched).

Attack on Kashyyyk

Vader continued his training, partnering with Imperial Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. Along with him, he used the presence of the Jedi on Kashyyyk as a reason to invade the planet. The purpose of this operation was to enslave the Wookiees, which were to be used in the construction of the Death Star.

When the bombardment of Kashyyyk began, Vader landed at the city of Kachiro, where the Jedi were hiding and hacked his way through the corpses of the Wookiees, moving towards the enemy positions. Vader defeated the five Wookiee Jedi, meeting with Master Roan Shrine, who had left him on Mercan.

The power and strength of Vader increased significantly, so he easily defeated Shrine, revealing to him the secret of his identity. Having defeated the master, Vader felt that he had achieved incredible power and from now on did not consider armor to be his prison.

After the victory of the Empire, Palpatine launched into the media messages about his student, mysterious to many inhabitants of the galaxy, and Vader, feeling the power, began to think about how to overthrow the teacher.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

On Kashyyyk, Vader also fought the Jedi and found his young son Galen in one of the houses. The Sith was about to kill the boy, but felt great power in him, taking him as his student.

No one knew that Vader had an apprentice. He began to train the boy, bringing up hatred and anger in him. Darth wanted to use the apprentice to oppose the Emperor, as Galen possessed great strength, greater than himself.

After 10 years of training, in 2 BBY, Vader's apprentice was ready. Sith christened him(Star Assassin) and gave him his first assignment, which was "the meaning of his life" to find the survivors of Order 66, the Jedi. At the apprentice's disposal, Vader issued a Proxy holodroid and a Rogue Shadow starship with a charming pilot.

After killing several Jedi, Vader appeared with Starkiller before Palpatine. Unexpectedly, he betrayed the student by "killing" him. As the Sith later explained to the surviving Starkiller, the Emperor found out about the student and the imaginary death saved his life.

In order to defeat Sidious, Vader sent Starkiller on a mission to gather all the members of the Alliance in order to destroy the Emperor. Dart's plan was cunning, he again framed his student, forcing him to gather all the enemies of the Empire in one place. When the meeting took place, all the heads of the Alliance were arrested. In the fight with the apprentice, Vader emerged victorious.

Starkiller survived and soon returned to take revenge on the teacher. Infiltrating the Death Star under construction, he fought the Sith Lord and defeated him. Sidious offered Galen to take Vader's place, but Marek chose the side of the world. To save the members of the Alliance, he sacrificed his own life, becoming the first Hero of the Rebellion.

After this incident, Vader seriously thought about how to overthrow Sidious.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2

In 1 BBY, Vader cloned the body of Galen Marek on Kamino. Many clones went insane until the perfect clone number 1138 was created. However, this clone fled, tormented by the memories of the original.

To get Starkiller back, Vader hired Boba Fett to steal Juno Eclipse, whom Marek was in love with.

Nothing good came of this, as Starkiller, having teamed up with the Alliance, struck at Kamino, where they created clones for the Empire. In the battle with the clone apprentice, Vader lost. So, Kamino was under the control of the Alliance, and Dart himself was captured. The Sith Lord was on trial, but Boba Fett saved him.

Vader's apprentice disappeared and all plans to overthrow the Emperor failed.

New Hope

Back in 0 BBY, Vader desired to locate the Rebel base and retrieve the stolen plans for the Death Star. According to the 501st Legion, the plans were on a ship from Alderaan flying to the Tantive IV.

The princess's ship was intercepted, but the plans slipped through the hands of the Sith. Interrogation of the senator from Alderaan also yielded nothing. Back then, Vader had no idea that he was torturing his own daughter.

Tracking the traces of the droid in which Leia hid the plans, Vader sent a team to Tatooine, where Owen and Bera Lars were executed while trying to find out information about the droid.

Vader proceeded to torture Leia, trying to get the location of the Rebel base from her. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin suggested using another method of torture - genocide. Threatened with the destruction of Alderaan, Organa gave away the place - Dantooine. However, Tarkin destroyed the planet anyway.

Darth Vader vs Kenobi

“Now he is more machine than man, an evil twisted machine.” Kenobi

Soon, the Death Star pulled the Millennium Falcon, which was near the destroyed Alderaan. On board the ship were:, and. For the first time in years, Vader felt the presence of his old master.

The Lord quietly wandered the corridors of the station until he met Obi-Wan. Their duel was short, as Kenobi simply extinguished his sword by merging with the Force. Despite this, Vader felt that he had avenged his crippled body.

After allowing the Millennium Falcon to leave with Lelei Organa and the plans for the Death Star on board, Vader began tracking the ship using the beacon that was installed on it.

The beacon led the Death Star to the planet Yavin, near which a legendary battle took place, the result of which was the destruction of the Empire's greatest weapon by the new Rebel hero - Luke Skywalker (Anakin's son). Vader himself, who fought in a TIE fighter, almost died.

For these actions, Vader received another reprimand from the Emperor.

Soon, Dart learned the name of the pilot who had the highest score in the Battle of Yavin, it turned out to be 19-year-old Skywalker. Vader wanted to capture his son in order to incline him to the dark side.

Luke was captured by the Empire several times, but he always managed to escape.

The Empire Strikes Back

In 3 ABY, a Rebel base on Hoth was discovered. When attacking the planet, most of the rebels managed to escape.

After a battle that ended in victory for the Empire, Vader was ordered by Sidious to capture Luke Skywalker, whom he wanted to become his new apprentice, replacing father with son.

In order to catch the Millennium Falcon, the Lord used all the connections with the bounty hunters. He figured out where the ship went and ambushed Cloud City owned by Lando Calrissian, who won it in Sabakk. Han Solo, in agreement with Boba Fett, was frozen in carbonite and handed over to a mercenary. Leia Organa and Chewbacca were supposed to be Vader's captives, but were unexpectedly rescued by Calrissian.

To save his friends, Luke Skywalker also flew to Cloud City, who met in a duel with Vader. During the battle, the young Jedi lost his arm, after which the Sith Lord revealed his essence to him:

vader: « Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father?»

Luke: « Quite enough! He said you killed him!»

vader: « No. I am your father!»

Refusing to join his father, Luke jumped into the mine.

Vader found his son's lightsaber, once his own, and a severed arm, which he presented to the Emperor as trophies.

Sidious began to notice changes in Vader, who was very proud of his son, whom he personally wanted to lure to the side of darkness. Therefore, the Emperor decided to kill Luke by sending him to Tatooine to Jabba's palace. However, Mara failed to get inside.

Return of the Jedi

Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker

In 4 ABY, Vader was overseeing the construction of the Death Star 2 when he sensed Luke approaching, in a shuttle bound for the moon Endor. Dart did not touch the shuttle.

On the moon, Luke himself surrendered to the Imperials and was taken to Vader. In an attempt to protect his son from Palpatine, Darth tried to convince him to join him, but Skywalker refused.

“I know that there is good in you. The emperor was unable to etch it entirely." Luke

Aboard the Death Star, in the presence of Palpatine, a decisive battle took place between Luke and Vader. Dart tried to persuade his son to the dark side by threatening the safety of Leia, Luke's sister. In anger, Skywalker cut off Vader's hand, which, like his own, turned out to be mechanical, forcing him to rethink the situation and extinguish the sword.

Palpatine wanted Luke to finish off his father, but he refused, which forced Vader to return to his bright beginning. In the dark heart of Darth, Anakin Skywalker woke up again, who, seeing how Palpatine was trying to kill his son with Force lightning, picked him up and threw him into the reactor shaft.

Palpatine's power damaged Vader's life support. He asked Luke to remove his mask so that he could see his son with his own eyes for the last time. Thus died the Chosen One who brought balance to the Force.

His spirit appeared to Luke and Leia, after which he found peace.
