Steve Wai and his guitar. Biography Do you think Rock is in decline

For many years, Steve Wai has been considered to be one of the best guitarists of the planet. And this title is in many ways justified. More than 20 years of Wai is a "legislator mod" for the entire guitar world. His unique style of the game causes admiration for the most sophisticated guitarists, and concerts always collect full halls.

The first guitar at Steve appeared in 12 years. School teams who were going for jokes for the sake of, lit a real passion for the tool in it. The course of the young fighter Wai was held in the world-famous Music College Berkeley, from where, by purchasing sufficient knowledge and technical skills, he fell into his first real rock band - Frank Zapple team. From this point on, the path of Stewa to world fame begins. In the 80s, he worked with such legendary rock bands like Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, WhitesNake. Public Image Limited.

However, Steve was closely as part of the traditional song format Rock and Roll. In 1990, Wai completely switches to the solo career, and in 1992 the first private team collects. From this point on, anyone's concert is a great guitar show with world-class musicians.

It is impossible to predict. Steve does not allow itself ordinary concerts with predictable production. Each program number is an original stage action - these are various special effects, and a demonstration of amazing examples of guitar skills, and sparkling humor when communicating with the hall. The exit of each new style album is accompanied by a huge excitement worldwide. Every time a musician presents surprises: then a double concert album recorded during the world tour (Alive in An Ultra World), then a fragment of a music and poetic fables with a complex philosophical concept (Real Illusions: Reflections).

In June 2007, a new guitarist album was released, recorded during joint concerts with the Netherlands orchestra "Metropol". On this double disk, Steve appears not only as a guitarist-virtuoso, but also as an orchestral music composer.

He began his career as a guitarist in 1980 in Frank Zapapy. Since 1983, he serves as an independent solo guitarist. The arrangement on the BLACK Page Track made a mistake impression on Frank, and he invited Steve to become a member of his group. In the record of the album" Skyscraper "Steve performed as a co-raid company In the same period, Steve Wai tries himself in a new sphere for him, develops a JEM 777 series of diligets, which sells Ibanez. We offer you an interview with Steve Wai, recorded in September 2013:

Today there are no young and new guitarists who can introduce innovations, just as you did, Zapap and Satriani. Why did it happen?

I suspect that in our days there are a lot of guitarists who introduce innovations, but we usually do not hear about them. In any era there will always be people who push the previously installed boundaries. Sometimes it takes time. But at the same time, this tool has not been subjected to this evolution for a long time, which I would like to see. But I expect that someone will soon appear who will connect together the execution technique, technology, fashion, modern views and create a game style, in which all the necessary elements will be, including rich melodic content. I look forward to this, but this has not happened.

You collaborated with many of the greatest rock stars. What experience would you call the best?

All these episodes of cooperation were bright moments. The experience that you have is based on your own respect.

Do you think Rock is in decline?

No, he just changes, like everything else. This is not the rock, which we knew in the last generation, and not the Rock, who knew the generation preceding the latter. Each generation has people who do not move forward, and which it seems that the right world order is dying.

Do you think that the musical industry killed music?

No, I don't think the music is dead, it is simply developing. Moreover, when a new musician appears, there is always much more tools at his disposal to create their own music, tools that allow you to penetrate this world and manage it. Our time is the best time for an independent artist in history in order to declare my views and defend them. Simply there are not particularly many independent performers who have the appropriate data. Yes, and before them were not very much, but the capable performers declare themselves. It's unavoidable.

The seventies were better than the eighties, but about the nineties and two thousands can not even remember, because it seems everything was already invented before. So where is the evolution?

Evolution is "now", and it happens, as happening in the 70s, 80s, etc. It always seems to us that we went to a dead end, but then someone appears and everything rethinks.

What is the difference between a new CD from the rest?

It differs from the old as much as I differ from the then myself. As for my playing guitar, in this CD, I was much more concentrated on phrasing and dynamics. I worked on making ringtones to sound as if they were talking to you, as well as to give the harmonies and melodic colors a large brightness and wealth. I had to work a lot about the rethinking of various techniques, but this work justifies myself when, as a result, you get something that you have never done before, something that sounds great for you. That's how this work is rewarded.

Don't you think that new generations are disoriented, or that the public is content with what is?

I am connected with the new generation by seeing and listening to the music that my children listen to. I have two sons. Now they are 21 years and 24 years, respectively, and they have excellent musical taste. All these years they kept her hand on the pulse of new music, new genres, etc. They listen to very different music. One of my son, Fire, who is now 21, loves techno, and he introduced me to all sorts of variations of techno, Dabstepa, Trip-House, etc. etc., and something from this gives me a considerable buzz.

My second son, Juliana, 24, and all these years he is fond of very, very heavy music, and he introduced me with stunning and progressive metal. It exists, and for the new generation this genre is new. I tried to play my sons all my favorite works, - Led Zeppelin, Queen, Deep Purple, ELP, Hendrix, David Bowie, Alice Cooper and others. They understand what their meaning, but they tell me: "Well, yes, dad, I understand it, but it all sounds old." That is, as you can see, if you do not change your views on what kind of music there is or what it should be, you can get stuck in these glances. Here acts ego.

It seems that these younger generations are just looking for quick success. What are their contributions to today's Rock?

He is the same in every generation. Usually there is a new movement, and this new movement is involved a very small number of very inspired people who have no choice but to follow the velves of their own unique genius. Then this music hears the masses, and she worries them, because she is different, and there is inspiration of the author. Then in the music community there is a movement, trying to copy this style, and these are these people and are looking for fast success. They are trying to prove on the brilliance of others, and they succeed, because the record companies sign contracts with all performers whose sound is similar to this new music. What is not in this music is a real inspiration in its essence itself. In the end, this music becomes a parody of itself, and the whole trend collapses. Then someone else appears, and the cycle is renewed.

You are a very universal guitarist. What makes you dissimilar to other musicians? Do you think that the guitar is the tool that is destined to be constantly inventing re-in?

I just develop the idea that I am interested. There are no other real reasons.

What are you waiting for now?

Nothing. I have already gained everything.

Do you think that the secret of music lies in its technical aspects?

I do not think that music has some kind of secret. I think music is something that everyone can do. You just need to overcome your fear of what you are allegedly not good enough that something does not work, or any other thoughts preventing you. I think that everyone can create music, just as everyone can do art, etc. Secret, if any, is to not give judgments about your work to influence you. But such a feat practically does not harm for most people.

What does not cease to amaze you in music?

A good idea that God appears news from where.

Steve Wai was born in New York on June 6, 1960. Among the whole musical abundance, to which he had access, the most crushing impression was made on him the art of such guitar asces, like (Jimi Hendrix) and (LED Zeppelin). Fate gave him an invaluable gift - in the same school that Steve visited, he studied already decently owned by a guitar (Joe Satriani), the future guitar hero. So the first guitar teacher Steve Waa was none other than Joe Satriani. Steve was fanatically devoted to the instrument, and at 18 years old, having time to play in several local rock bands, became a student of the famous music school Berkley (Berklee School of Music) in Boston. Until now, he recalls his parents with gratitude, who always supported his passion for music, from the last funds paid private lessons, and so that he could finish training in Berkeley, his father sold his life insurance policy. Steve Wai filed great hopes not only in practice, but also in the theory of music. I am still attending school wisdom, he took the arrangement for several guitar compositions (Frank Zappa), technically incredibly complex. A copy of one of his works he sent the author. The Zapap was in such a delightenment of the black page arrangement, which after a personal dating invited Steve to join his group.

So Step Wai became a full member of the Frank Zapap team, in which he was called a focker guitarist, then a small Italian virtuoso. He several times accompanied the pin in international tours and was recorded for its albums of the beginning of the 80s. You can hear the guitar on the plates "Tinsel Town Rebellion" and "You Are What You Is" (1981), "Ship Arriving Too Late" (1982), "MAN FROM UTOPIA" (1983), "Them or US and Thing Fish" (1984).

Nothing amazing that the creativity of Frank Zapple left an indelible mark in the soul of Steve Wai, and when he went to an independent road in the mid-80s, the presence of Zapaps was noticeably felt in his first solo attempts. Without finding financial support from recordings, the first two disks Steve Wai recorded at home on the studio tape recorder and published at his own expense. The "Flex-Able" and "Flex-Able Leftovers" and Flex-Able Leftovers published in 1984 demonstrated a passionate temperament and the characteristic humor of the musician, which gave it a special charm. As for the guitar technology, the lessons of Virtuosi Joe Satriani were most clearly affected.

In 1985, Steve Wai becomes a Lid-guitarist of the Alcatrazz group, replacing the departed (Yngwie Malmsteen). In the company, Alcatrazz record the album "Disturbing The Peace", left the public without attention. In the same 85th, the musician made his debut in the cinema - in the already cult film "Crossroads" ("Crossroads"). He was entrusted with the role of a guitarist who sold the soul to the Devil, who in the plot does not withstand guitar duel with Ralph Macho (Ralph Macchio), explodes and split into pieces.

Meanwhile, Billy Sheehan's close to each other Bassist offers him to try his hand at the backup of the singer David Lee Roth (David Lee Roth), who just started the solo career after leaving Van Halen. Having played with the group during a living show, in 1986, Wai participates in the recording of the Rota Debut Plate "Eat" Em & Smile ", which becomes one of the most significant hard rock albums of the year. Finally, the performing talent of Steve Waa, like his colleagues for Team Billy Shihan, fall into the center of attention of music lovers and professionals. The most prominent guitar publishings of the world call them names in the list of the best musicians in 1986.

Despite the fact that the quartet clearly expected a great future, Shihhen did not stay in it for a long time. He left immediately after the publication of the second album of Lee Rota "Skyscraper" in 1988. This plate is much more actively exploited by spectacular methods of pop music, but nevertheless has become another promoted rock hit. Steve Wai this time took compliments not only as a guitar virtuoso, but also as an album's cozer, over which he worked in collaboration with vocalist. In the same year, Wai debuts on one new one for himself - develops a new line of luxurious guitars. The JEM 777 Series 777 Tools produces and sells Ibanez.

The year 1988 dates back to another undertaking of Steve Wai, not related directly with his musical career. Together with Richard Pike (Richard Pike), he created a charitable organization "Make a Noise Foundation", which helps to get tools and get a musical education to talented children and adolescents from low-friendly families.

At the end of 1988, when the company's promotional tour in support of "Skyscraper" came to an end, the guitarist was in front of a serious choice. On the one hand, he has accumulated enough material for solo album, over which he began to slowly work. On the other hand, it was lured in every possible way in their ranks Metalists WHITESNAKE, staying at the peak of popularity. This offer he eventually accepted. His first and last album with WhitesNake "Slip of The Tongue" came out in 1989, and soon the musician took his own album. A year later, the guitarist presented a new solo "Passion & Warfare" (1990). Staying romantics in the soul, Steve Wai filled his compositions with dreams and fantasies who worried him as a teenager. Its inspiration and emotionality, not to mention the game's virtuoso technique, found a response in the hearts of many people. As for the instrumental album, Passion & Warfare had a great success, coming to the torus of the American pop chart and becoming gold already in the first week of sales. The album was nominated for Grammy and gathered a whole collection of premiums and loud titles awarded to him the largest musical publications. For example, Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines called Stevea Best in 4 categories each, including the best rock guitarist of the year. British Metal Weekly "Kerrang!" His title was the title "Guitarist of the Year", and the British magazine "Select Magazine" recognized the musician not only the best musician in general, but also the sexiest man.

Fanatically devoted to his art, rapidly expanding the vocabulary of the rock guitar, the musician once again confirmed the reputation of one of the top guitarists of the 80s. He also had a decisive influence on the next-generation performers, the children of the post-brand era. Guitar idols of the 90s James Shaffer from Korn Group, Mike Eyzinger (Mike Eizinger) from Incubus, Tom Morello from Audioslave in one voice called Stevea's main idol and teacher.

Soon the musician finished the creation of another tool - its own seven-time guitar Universe 7-String, over which she worked under a contract with Ibanez. Although at first the tool enjoyed very modest demand, his time came in the mid-90s. Steve Guitar entered the fashion when guitarists of metal groups such as Korn or Limp Bizkit began to use sevenrigers to achieve ultra-low sound.

After a long doubt and oscillations, Steve Wai, finally decided to collect his own rock team in the usual sense of the word. He called her just - VAI. This idea guitarist helped a young vocalist Devin Townsend (Devin Townsend), bass - guitarist T.M. Stevens (T.M. Stevens) and drummer Terry Bozzio. The quartet managed to actively work in the studio only once - over the first and last joint album "Sex & Religion", which appeared in 1993. When a doubt in full failure album no longer remained, Steve Wai dissolved the group and continued his traditional instrumental excursors.

The new mini-selection of his new compositions was published in 1995. EP was called "Alien Love Secrets". He followed another number of solo records. In 1996, the Album "Fire Garden" was released, in 1998 - "Flex-Able Leftovers" (reprint of his second album, which was not replicated for many years, supplemented with several tracks), in the 99th Solnik "The Ultra Zone" was published . At the same time, in the late 90s, the roads of Steve Waa and Joe Satriani crossed again. They retained friendly sympathy for life, and now decided to unite efforts for a larger effect, going annually in a joint tour. In their show programs, named G3, and other guitarists took part, each year someone new. In 1997, the very first round was documented on the living album "G3: Live in Concert".

In the 21st century, Steve Wai entered into active and full of new ideas. In 2000, a collection of his best guitar ballads "The 7th Song: Enchanting Guitar Melodies Archive" appeared. The secret of the name and the principle of selection is very simple. On all his albums published in 20 years, a guitar ballad was always seventh room. These songs could seem inappropriate on the original plates, but, assembled together, they sprouted outwardly.

In 2001, the guitarist released the first long-play of completely concert materials "Alive in An Ultra World", which considers the top of his conceptual designs. The rooms presented on the album were created, rehearsed and recorded right during the world tour of 32 countries in the world. Each song on the album is dedicated to a separate country and inspired by her musical culture. This release followed the impressive retrospective box-set "The Secret Jewel Box" on ten disks. In 2002, the musician collected under one cover composition written at different times for cinema. The whole 40 tracks have typed, among which - a guitar duel from the film "Crossroads" and the title topic to the tape "Bill and Ted" s Bogus Journey ". The collection was called" The Elusive Light and Sound Vol. one".

One of the most ambitious projects that the musician managed to implement is a special performance accompanied by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. The program sounded a concert for the "Fire Strings" electric guitar, written by an outstanding Japanese composer and concert pianist Ikiro Nodaira (Ichiro Nodaira). According to a guitarist, learn a 20-minute passage for an atomal electric guitar was the most serious test in his professional life. "It was almost impossible to play, so I took away the" Fire Strings "," says Steve Wai.

So far, we have almost mentioned the studio cooperation of the musician with its numerous contemporaries. Meanwhile, Steve Wai participated in the sessions of a huge number of performers and groups. Among the most interesting are the albums "Gregg Bissonette" and "Submarine" Gregga Bissone (Gregg Bissonette), "Hey Stoopid" Alice Cooper, "Funk Me Tender" Randy Coven (Randy Coven), "Infinite Desire" Al Dimeola (Al Dimeola) , "Symphony 1" Joe Jackson. Especially noticeable trace left Steve Wai in the releases of Frank Zapap. Its guitar can be heard on the Albums of ZaZZ From Hell and Shut Up "N Play Yer Guitar", on multiple disks from the "You Can" T DO TOAT ON STAGE ANYMORE series ", on a concert tribute to the musician's memory" Zappa "S Universe ".

It was the album "Zappa" S Universe "brought Wash the first grammy premium - for the best execution of the instrumental rock in the" Sofa "track. And the receipt of the second grammy is already as a better producer - was associated with its own label Favored Nations, where in 2001 The best instrumental pop album of the year "A No Substitutions: Live in Osaka", sprumeited and responded personally by the owner of the label.

And in his free from this crazy schedule, Steve Wai is engaged in ... beekeeping. Dilute bees - the dream of the whole of his life, which he carried out in the late 90s, when he bought his house and started five bee colonies. Also a good article of income in case of a complete collapse of the musical business ... But it is not foreseen. If it happens that Steve Wai will last for some reason stop playing, he can always consist by composer. To begin with, it will be possible to simply disassemble those dubbeds already written and not yet performed things that have accumulated from him for 25 years of a happy novel with music.

"The biggest miracle I know is when I have a strange, extraordinary sound in my head, and I manage to translate it into a language of reality, using the musical instruments that I have," Steve Vai (Steve VAI) admits. - Make it What else could not be able to anyone - that's what interests me most. " Increased irresistible curiosity and azart pioneer, Steve Wai grew up in the present magician of the six-string guitar of the 80s, inimitable virtuoso and the creator of unique sounds.

In 2004, some of his compositions and orchestra arrangements, including those recorded earlier, were executed in the Netherlands with Metropole Orchestra in a series of concerts called "The Aching Hunger". In 2003, the drummer Jeremy Kolson joined the group of Wai, replacing the previous drummer Virgil Donati. The last album of Waaya, "Sound theories", was released in 2007.

Steve Wai released a DVD of his speech at "The Astoria" in London in December 2001, where the bass player Billy Shihanpi, guitarist and pianist Tony Makalpin, guitarist and Pianist, and Australian Drikher Virgil Donati.

In February 2005, Wai presented Ibanez guitar with two griffers (electric and classic), called The Blossom Suite, along with the classic guitarist Sharon Isbin in the Paris Shatle Theater. In 2006, Wai played as a special guest on the guitar along with other former participants of the Frank Zappa, the drummer of Terry Bosio, the guitarist-singer Raem White and Saxophonist-singer Napoleon Murphy Brock as part of the Zappa Plays Zappa tour headed by the Son Zappa, Douisille Popya, Europe and the USA, as well as a brief tour of the United States in October.

On September 21, 2006, Wai made a special performance at Video Games Live in Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood (California). He performed two songs with Hollywood Bowl Orchestra: "Halo Theme", and the second song was a composition for the world premiere of the trailer for the game Halo 3.

Steve Wai appeared on London Guitar Show on April 28, 2007 in Excel Center. At the end of April 2007, Wai confirmed the release of his last album called "Sound theories" scheduled for June 26. The release of the kit on two CDs consisting mainly of the previously released material, rewritten by both (it redo the arrangement) and executed with the symphony orchestra. Wai says that the project was a great joy, because he considers himself a composer more than a guitarist, and he is happy to see the music he composed, well-fulfilled orchestra. DVD followed the album, but he was not released until the end of that year. Steve appeared on the album of the Dream Theater "Systematic Chaos" group, on the song "REPENTANCE". The appearance was vocal, not instrumental, since Wai was just one of the many invited musicians on this track. Many musicians whose goal is attended in the song - to apologize to important people in their lives for mistakes committed in their past. On August 29, 2009, he appeared on stage with Dream Theater at the final show of their tour "Progressive Nation" in Greek Theater, where he performed improvisational jam with other musicians of the group.

When Steve takes the guitar, magic begins. The one who seen his speeches live knows how intense is how much the true "plant" is in them. When you listen and you see Hay, "he whatever you believe," because even a fool is clear without binoculars - energy and sensuality go from the soul of the musician. The gypsy appearance of the guitarist attracts and repels at the same time (yes rocker must be somewhat nasty). Steve's eyes - in constant contact with the hall, and that at this time it creates his hands and the body with difficulty is amenable to description. Guitar (Ibanez JEM) obeys him unquestioning whether he caresses her fingers or torments the tongue.

Steve Wei (June 6, 1960) - Rod from Long Island. The lessons of the guitar began to take in the mid-70s from some kind of dude named Joe Satriani. On the first lesson, Steve came with a guitar and strings. "I didn't even know how they stretch." 3 years did not pass in vain: taking from his teacher the best, Wei developed his own style (what is likely to blame the talent). The friendship of Steve and Joe is growing and developing, the guys have repeatedly toured together and plan to undergo more than once. But all this will still be.

In the meantime, Eighteen-year-old Steve is being launched in the group now the late Frank Zapaps, the blocked by the filigree deposit of the game of a young guitarist. He called VEI "Young Italian Virtuoso". Subsequently, the guitar challenged Steve to many rock teams, the most famous for its "shooting" as part of the David Rota group (2 albums), Alcatrazz (1 album) and WhitesNake (1 album). It is impossible not to mention and participate in the record of the Alice Cooper Hey Stoopid. Well, work on Ozzy Osborne can be considered simply pampering. "We wrote so much music that they just wanted to take and release a whole album, but the difficulties began with the firm of Ozzy, and the project had to refuse. I then wrote very heavy things, Othersborn recorded one of them, and the rest is waiting for the best times. And yet work with seeing cool. He is the most cheerful and dismissal dude in the world. And besides, he is rock and roll to the brain of bones. Do not forget, because it has created a heavy metal. "

Do not think, however, that Steve worked only on uncle. Its fully his talent revealed in solo works. 5 albums for 12 years, perhaps not so much, but what albums! The later masterpiece "Fire Garden" came out in September 96 and noted not only the seal of the master, but also lasting Tuna, both with his team and in a bundle with groups of Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. The joint project of Steve with the composer and a conductor Joell Tumom is also interesting. In the same September, they performed at a joint meeting with an orchestra of 60 people who were commanded by Tum. Guys binds a long-standing love for Frank Zapat, which both consider a spiritual father.

Wei, like many of the current rock performers, is actively working for cinema. I consider it the best work (at the same time acting, compositive and performer), I consider the "crossroads" cinema ("Crossroads"), where Steve depicts a bad guy named Jack Butler, soldering the soul to the devil for the title of the best guitarist. Although, along the course of the case, the Hero of VEI loses in the musical duel of the young white bluesman (actor Ralph Machio), to the fact that such a "pretzel" can think hard. Unfortunately, there is no sound track to the film in the form of a separate CD, but how the devils are good there! Those who have never been convicted of him on stage, very much recommend finding Wyji and watch her. All living and breathes this person - in 15-20 minutes on the screen.

By the way, despite its damn appearance, Steve a pretty decent person, he is a vegetarian, alcohol and drugs do not use. "As a child, I smoked marijuana, and in school years he was fond of alcohol. Especially gained when he played with" big "teams. But now it's all behind. I have nothing against my friends who eat meat and consume alcohol and foolishness, if only It did not reach the limit. "

Well, let a healthy lifestyle behave Steve to the most tops of rock-olimpa. Moreover, he gives his music most of his life, and if God exists for him, he has the form of a guitar. "I like musicians who work to become virtuosos, those who combine inspiration and creativity with stubborn labor. I myself are the same, and therefore I don't care about these grangevikov who make millions only on the image, but they themselves do not know how to play . But if they are accompanied by success, let the Lord bless them. " Well, Wei himself as ideal partners called Basist Billy Shihan, Drummer John Bonam and Vocalist Freddie Mercury. Like this.
