March 19, 2017 at the main boxing arena of the planet Madison Square Garden, the long-awaited duel between the two best middleweights of the planet took place. World champion in versions of WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO Gennady Golovkin returned to Boxing Mecca in order to defend his three belts in a duel with mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs. The IBF belt at the last moment was removed from the rally due to violations by Jacobs of the rules of weighing the International Boxing Federation.

The history of the organization of the battle

Almost immediately after the fight of the Kazakhstan super champion with the British boxer Kell Brook, the International Association of Professional Boxing (WBA) obliged Golovkin no less than 120 days after September 12, 2016, to fight with regular champion Daniel Jacobs. The parties were given 30 days to negotiate, after which, if there were no result, tenders would be held. It should be noted that Golovkin himself expressed a desire to fight in a unification match with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, who, learning about the challenge of the Kazakhstani, promised that the money would not become an obstacle to the organization of the meeting. However, history decided to go the other way.

September 23, 2017, after it became known that Saul Alvarez injured his hand during a fight with Liam Smith and could not speak before the end of the year, ESPN.com, citing the words of promoter Golovkin Tom Leffler, reported that on the date of the battle, Canelo - December 10, 2016 - a meeting may be scheduled for Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. In parallel, representatives of the WBA informed the sports community that negotiations between Golovkin and Jacobs on the organization of the battle had started.

On October 19, 2017, information appeared on ESPN.com that the meeting between Jacobs and Golovkin would definitely not take place on December 10, 2016. At the same time, the site said that the parties are not leaving the negotiation process and intend to organize a duel in early 2017.

WBA management gave managers Golovkin and Jacobs an additional 7 days to complete the transaction, and on December 8, the organization announced that it would announce tenders on December 19 if the parties did not reach a consensus. Already on December 16, Tom Leffler told reporters that all the differences were settled, and the next day the battle was officially announced: Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs were to meet on March 19 at the Madison Square Garden arena.

Records, recent fights and brief characteristics of Golovkin and Jacobs

Gennady Golovkin

Gennady Golovkin before the fight with Jacobs had a record of 36-0, including 33 knockouts. Since the beginning of 2015, he has held six meetings, and the last time he entered the ring in September 2016, when he stopped Kell Brook. This fight is considered by many to be the most difficult and most important in the career of a Kazakhstani. He was not afraid to speak in Brooke’s native London and stopped the opponent in the fifth round in the competition.

Golovkin is already 35 years old, but he is deservedly considered the best middleweight of the world at the moment and is one of the heaviest drummers in modern boxing. Gennady acts superbly in attack and has repeatedly proved that he has a strong chin, allowing him to boldly go into exchanges. Golovkin’s weak point is called defense, which makes him a relatively easy target for hits.

Daniel Jacobs

Daniel Jacobs before the fight with Golovkin had a record of 32-1, including 29 knockouts. Jacobs won 12 extreme meetings, and the last time in September 2016 defeated Sergio Moru. Jacobs performed perfectly after the only loss in his career that the American suffered from Dmitry Pirog, and Daniel recorded his asset after the failure ahead of schedule.

Jacobs has impressive anthropometry for his weight and is superior to Golovkin in height. This fact, combined with knockout power and high mobility, makes Daniel a difficult rival for any boxer. Despite the fact that Jacobs lost only once, his main drawback was always not the strongest chin, because of which he lost to Pie in 2010 and faced difficulties in other battles.
