Fallout 4: how to join the Underground and complete the Road to Freedom quest
There are four factions in Fallout 4, and, oddly enough, the most difficult faction to make friends with is not the mysterious Institute.
To join Underground, you need to start a hidden quest, complete it despite the complete lack of even hints on how to do this, and then go through initiation.
However, it's worth it. Joining the Underground allows you to recruit a Deacon, get the amazing Savior gun, and customize your clothing. How to do this?
How to finish “Road to Freedom”
For some, a more relevant question may be “how to start the Road to Freedom.” It can be launched in several ways, and if it is still not on your list of quests, walk around Nick Valentine's detective agency, the NPCs who hang around there often talk about “Underground”, which will be your first step.
The starting marker for “Road to Freedom” is located at "Boston Common" near Park Street station and Swan Pond (watch out for the Swan). There is a hand-drawn sign marking the beginning of the “Road to Freedom”, at the end of which you will need to find a lantern. After that you are on your own, all you need to do is follow the path.
Fortunately, the answer is simple: “The Road to Freedom” is just a tourist route, marked with red pavement tiles, leading down the street, near the sign. Just follow the red marks drawn in the right places.
Naturally, this is easier said than done: the line often disappears under the rubble. Remember, this is a footpath so it doesn't merge with or go under the motorway, so there shouldn't be too much trouble, although you will pass some pretty dangerous spots.
You don’t even need to actually follow the path itself; you can immediately follow where it ends, namely to “Old North Church”. This dungeon is located in northeast Boston near the river bank. Be careful, there are ghouls inside!
How to solve the puzzle in the Old North Church
As soon as you enter the “Old Northern Church”, go into the main hall and turn immediately to the right. You should notice a symbol painted above the tunnel leading to the catacombs located below.
Follow the tunnels until you eventually come to a dead end with a round device on the wall. The letter ring can be rotated counterclockwise or clockwise, highlighting its different parts, and the button in the center can be pressed. You need to make up the word “ railroad“, selecting the appropriate letters and pressing the button after each one.
When the door opens, go inside, the “Underground” will be waiting for you.
Joining the Underground, recruiting a Deacon, obtaining a “Savior”
Be polite to Synth sympathizers and they will ask you to prove the strength of your convictions. This will unlock the mission for you “ Undercover work“: passage through a long dungeon with packs of hostile Synths and excellent loot.
At the end of the mission, you will be asked to officially join the Underground and take Deacon as your companion.
You will also receive “Savior”. This unique 10mm pistol is a monster, if you have enough Dexterity you will be able to use VATS almost continuously. Equip it with a silencer and various damage upgrades, take the Lively and Duelist perks, wear armor that does not limit the capabilities of VATS, upgrade your Agility and Perception, and you will simply be unstoppable.

"Road to Freedom": walkthrough
To follow the freedom path, you need to get to Boston Common. Now find a robot tour guide in the area, he will tell you the starting point of the trail, which will take you to all the main attractions of Fallout 4.
The road to freedom is a red brick trail. Following this path will take you to the Massachusetts headquarters. The main thing is not to go astray, because it often gets lost under rubble and debris. If you lose track, stop and look around. Sooner or later you will find the right direction. If you follow the right path, your second destination will be Granary Bearing Ground - an ancient Boston cemetery, one of the most impressive landmarks in Fallout 4.
The road to freedom is difficult and dangerous
Be extremely careful: there are several ghouls wandering among the dilapidated graves. After searching the area, you can find a corpse, and next to it - a bag with weapons and ammunition. To continue your journey, find the old bus, a new trail begins from it. The next landmark you will encounter along the way is the Old Corner Bookstore building. Inside you can find a small cache with lids and a couple of first aid kits. Next stop is the Old Capitol. Friendly ghouls have settled in the old building, led by their mayor, Hancock, who can become your partner. The player can also take on a couple of additional quests.
Be extremely careful as you approach your next destination, Fanell Hall. Both inside and outside the building is infested with aggressive super mutants. After the battle, go to Paul Revere's house, there will also be a shootout here.
Final destination
As you approach the finale of the journey, the Old Northern Church, get ready: a hot battle with representatives of the local fauna awaits you. Having won, go inside, but do not relax. The church has become the new home for the ghouls, and they will fiercely defend their territory. After killing your opponents, go to the doors opposite the entrance. Behind them there will be catacombs that you need to go through. To avoid getting lost, use your pip-boy.
The final destination will be a metal disk with the inscription “Ring of the Freedom Trail”. You need to use it to enter a password - the word RAILROAD. This is quite easy to do: rotate the ring in different directions, and when you get to the desired letter, press the central button. After entering the password, the door will open leading to the underground shelter. Inside you will be met by a squad led by Desdemona. And you have to undergo a short interrogation, because the Underground is very suspicious of strangers. If you answer all the questions correctly, you will be able to enter the shelter at any time. By rotating the disk, enter the password (the letters must be placed opposite the red arrow, if the letter was set correctly, you will hear a click, after it, set another letter, and so on until the bitter end).
Quest “Molecular Level”
You will receive the “Molecular Level” quest after visiting the House of Memories, which is located in the city of Good Neighborhood, as part of the storyline. We ask the doctor to decrypt the hunter's chip (by then you will have it). She will answer that she will not be able to decipher it herself, but knows those who will help and point out Subway in Fallout 4.

"The Path of Freedom" or "Find the Subway"
You can find the mysterious organization “Underground” even before completing the main plot.
Options for finding a secret organization:
1. While walking through the streets of Diamond City, the Survivor will accidentally hear the townspeople talking about the Institute, synths and kidnapping. This is how the task “Road to Freedom/Follow the Path of Freedom” begins.
2. If by the time you complete the main story quest “Molecular Level” you have not yet found the “Subway”, then the game will direct you straight to “Good Neighborhood”. In the House of Memories, the Survivor will have a conversation with Dr. Amari. It turns out that she is unable to decipher the hunter’s chip, but she will tell you that she knows the way to an organization such as “Underground” and will give the code phrase “Follow the Path of Freedom.”
No matter which option you choose, there is only one path awaiting the Survivor: “Follow the Path of Freedom.”
So, we set up our pip-boy for the main task and go to Boston Common. This is the beginning of the journey.
In the park near the fountain you will see a sign with the inscription “At the end of the path, follow the light of freedom” (translation from English). There you can chat with a robot guide and learn about the Freedom Path and the history of Boston Common.
Note:
Be careful, there is a swan in the pond near the fountain, but not a beautiful one, but a terrible mutant thirsting for destruction and new victims. If you are not ready for such a meeting, stay away.
From here, from Boston Common, you will follow the “red path”, passing through memorable places of the once wonderful city. Stops will include famous historical sites.
The first sign of the “Freedom Path” with code 7 and “A” is located here at the fountain, a red line stretches from it like a pointer.
Along the entire path it will be interrupted by rubble, but it is not difficult to find a continuation; it will be much more difficult to fight off cruel raiders, bloodthirsty ghouls and creepy super mutants blocking your excursion. Arm yourself well, and not only with super-weapons, but with a pen and a piece of paper, because you will have to write down the codes that you will see while examining the “Signs of the Freedom Path”.

This is where the codes that you examined along the way will come in handy. First you need to create a word, which is quite simple. If you have gone through the entire route and written down all the codes, then all that remains is to put the numbers in order and you will get the word “RAILROAD”.
By turning the ring clockwise or counterclockwise, point the red arrow at the code letter, then press the button after each letter.
If a miracle happens and the secret door opens, then you have completed the task, the “Underground” has been found!
In Game. To find its headquarters, you will have to go Freedom's Path Fallout 4. To start the task, walk around Damond City. Listen to conversations in the market or in a bar. When it comes to the Institute, the quest will start. The difficulty is that the quest marker does not appear on the map.
A park
Start your search by heading to Park Street Station. Go to the abandoned fountain. There is a robot guide walking nearby. This is the first hint on how to pass the Freedom Path in Fallout 4. Follow this route and carefully watch your step - you will periodically come across slabs. Write down letters and numbers.
Be careful - the streets are full of wild ghouls, super mutants, mongrels, raiders, kamikaze super mutants and hounds.
Church
You will eventually come to the Old North Church. Inside, deal with the ghouls and find the entrance to the basement - the image of a lantern on a beam will serve as a guide.
There will be ghouls in the catacombs again. After walking a little along the underground corridors, you will see a mechanism in the form of a circle with an inscription on the wall. You must enter a password. If you have collected all the letters, you should have the word RAILROAD. Using the E button, rotate the outer ring of the mechanism and activate all the letters of the password in sequence when they are above the arrow.
A secret passage will open on the left - this is the Subway headquarters. At first you will not be greeted very friendly, but they will agree to talk. Desdemona is the leader of the faction.
