A 10 MP (10.3) CMOS sensor with an absolute size of 21.5×14.4 mm allows us to consider the Sony Cyber-shot R1 as the ancestor of a new class of digital cameras. The quality of the image formed by the "large" matrix, and its "optical" features (the dependence of the depth of field on the aperture) puts it on a par with digital SLRs. And the concept - "a camera with non-replaceable optics, a pseudo-mechanical focus drive (a ring on the lens), an electronic viewfinder and a not very large buffer" - is on a par with such devices as: Sony Cybershot DSC-F828, Minolta DIMAGE A2 and A1 and others like them.

Both DSLRs and cameras with non-replaceable lenses have their adherents. Not everyone needs interchangeable optics. But by refusing it, the buyer usually loses: a wide range of photosensitivity, as a result - the ability to shoot without a tripod and at slow shutter speeds in low light, "direct" mechanical control over the focus setting, speed and "length" of the series. It is clear that all of the above are not insurmountable shortcomings. The Sony Cyber-shot R1 is proof of that. "Losing" can now be left in the past tense. And let "R1" is not yet up to the mark in everything by the standards of the "DSLR", but it is an important stage on the way to a "clean" figure. After all, no matter what the adherents of optical (reflex) viewfinders say, even manufacturers of modern digital SLR cameras do not consider it necessary to make them (viewfinders) as high quality (light, comfortable, interchangeable, etc.) as on film cameras. And, perhaps, soon the electronic viewfinder will become a more effective framing tool than a mirror and a prism (or mirror system).

The electronic viewfinder allows you to "see" what is actually being captured. There is nothing to shake the camera in it, like a mirror in a DSLR. “Picking” the signal from the sensor for framing slightly increases the delay in shooting, but for a studio where fast response is not so important, using this technology for sighting and manual focusing provides more comfort, accuracy and reliability (confidence in “frame boundaries” and focus). But you can use not only the built-in display of the camera, but also a connected (so far, unfortunately, only via the video channel) external one. What is achieved in rare DSLRs (matrix sighting in Canon EOS 20Da and Fuji S3Pro) with such great difficulty and so "inferior", on a large (APS size) Sony Cyber-shot R1 matrix - regular mode.



Typically, cameras with fixed lenses belong to the compact class. "R1" is not one of them. Almost a kilogram of weight and far from pocket size. Unfortunately, even with such an extension of the lens, the capabilities of the macro mode are rather modest - the matrix is ​​\u200b\u200btoo large for this.

Partly thanks to him, it was possible to "achieve a significant reduction in response time and significantly reduce image noise" (). Turn-on time is reported to be 0.68s, shutter lag 0.29s, shutter lag 0.0075s. The camera can save pictures in JPEG and RAW. When saving as JPEG, you can adjust: sharpness, contrast, saturation, and choose one of three color spaces (sRGB Vivid / sRGB Standard / Adobe RGB).

Like many modern digital cameras, the R1 has a built-in image "optimizer" - the A.G.C.S (Advanced Gradation Control System - gradation control system). “The system evaluates the brightness distribution on the screen and applies the appropriate gamma distribution (illuminance distribution) curve, which can increase the clarity of the image. Shooting in challenging environments, such as shooting a dimly lit subject against a bright background, is no problem for the Cyber-shot R1 - thanks to the A.G.C.S function, the brightness is balanced and the result is an evenly lit image" (Press release). The camera (compared to its predecessors) has become more "professional" and, unfortunately, "lost" such functions as video shooting, holographic illumination and shooting without an IR filter (there are no night shooting and night framing modes).

The Sony Cyber-shot R1 has an electronic viewfinder and a swivel display. The electronic viewfinder is noticeably slow. In many cases, it is more convenient to use a rotary display. It is located on top and, thanks to its rotations, allows you to shoot while observing the scene from anywhere in the upper hemisphere. To shoot "over your head" you need to turn the camera itself. To make shooting convenient, the “display-viewfinder” system is endowed with two useful functions: automatic switching of the display-viewfinder when the photographer’s face approaches the camera, and “Preview” and “Framing” signal display modes. In the Preview mode, the image is displayed taking into account aperture settings and exposure in general, which allows you to visually control the depth of field and the distribution of brightness. The "Framing" mode with signal amplification is convenient for shooting in low light, this is the familiar mode of most digital cameras with non-replaceable lenses. The main camera settings are displayed on the display and in the viewfinder, there are histogram and “grid” display modes.


Changing the focal length and manual focusing is done using the rings on the lens. Target fragments (upper half) for focal lengths (top to bottom): 14.3 mm, 29.7 mm, 71.5 mm; f/5.6. Distortion is moderate. Barrel-shaped at a short focus is replaced by a pincushion at medium focal lengths, with increasing focal length, the distortion becomes almost imperceptible.

Resolution, chromatic aberration, distortion, vignetting

The resolution of the tested sample is not very high - approximately 0.67 lines per matrix element. But for a 10 megapixel camera, this is not so important. A large matrix allows you to aperture the lens in the entire possible range of aperture values ​​and at the same time almost not lose in resolution.

Noise and white balance
