Alekasander Balos
Alkasandr Balos is a contemporary Polish artist specializing in oil painting. Born 1970 in Gliwice, Poland, but since 1989 has been living and working in the United States, in Shasta, California.
As a child, he studied art under the guidance of his father Jan, a self-taught artist and sculptor, therefore, from an early age, artistic activities received full support from both parents. In 1989, at the age of eighteen, Balos left Poland for the United States, where his school teacher and part-time artist Katie Gaggliardi encouraged Alkasandra to enroll in art school... Balos then received a full scholarship from the University of Milwaukee Wisconsin, where he studied painting with philosophy professor Harry Rosin.
After completing his studies in 1995 and earning his bachelor's degree, Balos moved to Chicago to attend school. visual arts, whose methods are based on the work of Jacques-Louis David. Figurative realism and portraiture made up the bulk of Balos' work in the 90s and early 2000s. Today Balos uses the human figure in order to highlight the peculiarities and to show the shortcomings of the human being, while not offering any solutions.

They could tell a lot to an attentive viewer about such seemingly self-evident things as the benefits of swimming, dancing, and so on. My characters are pressed against the glass of the shower stall window, distorting their own body, realizing that they thereby influence the notorious male look at a naked woman. Thick layers of paint are blended to mimic glass, steam, water and flesh from afar. However, amazing physical properties become apparent up close. oil paint... By experimenting with layers of paint and color, I find a moment where abstract strokes become something else.

Denis Chernov
Denis Chernov is a talented Ukrainian artist, born in 1978 in Sambir, Lviv region, Ukraine. After graduating from the Kharkov Art School in 1998, he stayed in Kharkov, where he currently lives and works. He also studied at the Kharkov state academy Design and Arts, Department of Graphics, graduated in 2004.

1. NEOREALISM.

The art of the most expensive young Russian artists (even those whose names have long been heard) is still quite accessible. "Entrance ticket" to the top 20 will cost less than $ 5,000
The source of inspiration for our new ranking was the recent curious world top 10 most expensive works of artists under 33 years old, which came from two names. Not wanting a similar fate to our authors, we used our traditional rule "one artist - one painting".
In addition, it was decided to raise the age limit for a young artist from 33 to 35 years old. Because it is this age that is taken as a formal criterion for a "young artist" in Russian competitions, prizes and biennials. In particular, 35 years is a cut-off for the "New Generation" nomination of the "Innovation" award, for the "Young Artist" nomination in the Kandinsky Prize, for participation in the Moscow International Biennale of Young Art Youngart.ru, for incentive scholarships of the CSK "Garage" and many other projects for young artists. So, reluctantly, we had to exclude everyone born before 1979 from the rating.
The next selection criterion: place of birth - USSR. Therefore, the rating included not only our today's compatriots, but also other artists of the orbit of Russian art from near or far abroad - be it Ukraine, France or Great Britain. So don't be confused by the individual names - that's how it was intended.
And of course, our rating, as always, is based solely on public auction sales. Gallery deals are not taken into account, as the matter is painfully dark. Prices do not include the buyer's premium and are traditionally quoted in the transaction currency and in dollars at the exchange rate at the date of sale. So, here's what we got.
What can be noted at the end?
The art of young Russian artists (even those whose names have long been heard) is still relatively inexpensive. An "admission ticket" to the top 20 will cost less than $ 5,000. And already for 8,000-10,000 dollars, collectors managed to buy the best things of Tatyana Akhmetgalieva, Valery Chtak, or the less known “Russian Frenchman” Vitaly Rusakov, well known to us. The French gallery recently brought the graffiti of the latter to the Salon of Fine Arts in Moscow, where, as they said, the artist is quite popular. All in all, you will be surprised that in order to buy the entire top 20 of Russian young art, a hypothetical collector or investor would have had enough 218,903 dollars (adjusted for the condition "one artist - one painting").
Seekers of a universal "formula for success" in art will be disappointed this time too. One dominant style and direction in the work of the group of record holders is not traced. On the contrary, a wide range of genres and trends is represented. From postmodernism to realism. Technique is also full of variety. There are graphics, photography, textiles, and ceramics. But, nevertheless, 11 out of 20 works are painting (canvas, oil or acrylic). This is hello to those who have long been predicting the death of painting in general and in contemporary art in particular.
So, the type of art and the genre of the work are not of decisive importance. At the same time, it is clear that in order to be successful, one must “be in trend” - and not in Russia, but in the world. Young Russian artists are trying to do this: their works are extremely actual.
For this, in a number of cases, they use acute social problems, actual pictorial motives and artistic techniques, mixing types and genres of art in a postmodern spirit. Like stenciling a drawing on the surface of a canvas, like in graffiti, or digital art techniques in painting. However, despite all their postmodernism and acute social orientation, the authors clearly do not forget that these works should also be pleasing to the eye and fit into the design of modern interiors. Hence - smoothness and a touch of gloss, curtsies towards realism (photorealism). And of course, we will count as a huge plus for the buyers the fact that our rating of young artists managed to do without the romantically sugary nudes, which are massively sold at auctions (fortunately, mainly at interior auctions) and posted even more enthusiastically on blogs.
Another thing that catches your eye is the large gap between the first and second results. The record innovative digital art of Oleg Dow separates from the second place - the painting of Veronica Smirnova - as much as 20 thousand dollars. By the way, as soon as we broke the rule "one artist - one picture" - and the Russian ambassador of the program Adobe Photoshop (in April 2012, the work of Oleg Dow graced the cover of Photoshop CS6) would have taken seven additional places in our rating with his works. Why not Liu Chunxi? But our Dow is even two years younger.
Surprisingly, almost half of the records in our top 20 come from 2011-2013. That is, this is not some kind of pre-crisis "affairs of bygone days", but quite a living commercial process.
It is also noteworthy that only six works from the top 20 rating received their high marks at our national auctions - at the Kiev "Golden Section" and at the Moscow VLADEY and the auction of the "Russian Art Gallery". All the others collected cash at foreign auctions, most often at Phillips, which, however, also belongs to Russian owners. And the point here is not only that there is no prophet in his own country. And not only that in Russia the purchase of works by young artists is still perceived almost as an eccentricity. And also that the national auction infrastructure, working with contemporary art, is just beginning to form. The same VLADEY auction recently held only its first auction, and the old-timers of the Moscow auction market do not work with contemporary art (especially art of the XXI century): the audience of buyers is small, and good commissions cannot be earned on inexpensive items. But in the near future, this niche of accessible contemporary art will be attacked by other trading formats - new electronic platforms, which have a strong offline reputation behind them. In particular, the other day the structure of Sergei Gridchin (the owner of the art residence Gridchinhall) announced the launch of a new electronic platform Artlet.com in September - with almost 200 contemporary artists... They will not be included in our rating (there is not an auction principle), but we all need to go, not checkers.
