Oil paintings for beginners step by step. Simple oil paintings for beginners. How to start painting with oil paints? How to paint with oil paints on paper

Oil painting is one of the most popular techniques visual arts... It was actively used in the past, but it is no less relevant now. Painting done oil paints, looks elegant and noble. However, learning to paint with oils is not an easy task, although it is a lot of fun.

Oil painting - differences from other types of painting

Among the main differences between oil painting and other types of painting, it is necessary to indicate the following points:

Almost all modern paints consist of dry pigment and liquid, but oil is also added to oil paints, usually linseed oil. Due to this, the paint dries slowly, but if it dries, it is very difficult to wipe it off.

Oil paints are thick, they are contained in tubes. From them, paints are squeezed onto a palette, mixed with each other to find new shades. If they harden, then they are diluted with oil or solvent.

IN oil painting you can draw for a long time. First, one layer is applied, then the drawing is dried for three days, and then new colors can be applied on top.

It takes three to six months for the pattern to dry completely. Then a protective layer of dammar varnish is applied to the image.

Oil Painting for Beginners - Getting Started

Oil painting begins with careful preparation for work. It consists of the following steps:

  • Choice of paints. Even when painting with oils, it is not recommended for beginners to buy very cheap paints. It is better to give preference to a product at an average price. It is recommended to choose white, yellow, red, blue and black by color. In various combinations, other colors can already be obtained from them.
  • Purchase of brushes. Paint brushes should be simple but high quality. Keep them flat, round, and bristly in varying thicknesses. Soft brushes are not suitable for oil paints.
  • Preparation of other instruments. Oil painting is unthinkable without a palette knife (a thin spatula for mixing and removing paint), a palette, canvas, rags, a can for cleaning brushes, thinner or linseed oil. It will also gradually be possible to purchase an easel, toolbox, protective film and an apron.
  • Organization of the workplace. The easel must be placed in a well-lit and always well-ventilated place. The floor will need to be covered with something, as it can be easily damaged by drops of paint. The height of the easel should be adjusted according to the height of the artist, and depending on whether he will be standing or sitting while working.

Oil painting lessons - basic step-by-step technique

If you imagine the lessons of drawing in oil in the form of a basic step-by-step technique, you get the following algorithm of actions:

  • Sketch. First, it is recommended to make a sketch of the future picture with a simple pencil on canvas. It should include compositing and painting. small parts... You also need to think about how to fill in the background near the main subject of the drawing. Then, according to the sketch, you will already apply paints. However, the sketch can be discarded if you plan to draw something abstract.
  • Colors. First, just in your head, put your future picture on the shelves - what colors it consists of, and how you can get them (by mixing what colors). Then start "producing" those colors on the palette. Work with shades and brightness of colors, trying to achieve the desired result. However, remember that mixing several paints to re-obtain exactly the same color that you originally made is almost impossible. That is, paints need to be mixed with a stock, so that not only today, but even tomorrow and the day after tomorrow you have something to paint.
  • Picture. When working with oil paints, paint on the thick-on-liquid principle. It is about first using liquid, diluted paints, and then applying thick paints over them. Also begin to master the oily vivacity by training first on simple forms, and gradually move on to more difficult subjects... Let each layer of paint dry well (three days!), And only then move on to the next layer. While the paint is still wet, you can touch up the drawing.
  • Varnishing. After the painting is completely finished, dry it well. Depending on the number of layers, it may take three months or more to completely dry it. It should dry in a dry, well-ventilated area. Then, to protect against fading and damage to paints, the picture can be varnished. And as the varnish dries, the image can be hung in some conspicuous place.

Nowadays, many people are trying to diversify their leisure time. To do this, they come up with various activities and hobbies. The most popular of these are handicrafts and painting. The latter is perfect for people who have not found themselves in other types of creativity. If you are one of them, then try painting in oil. For beginners, this business may seem difficult, but following all the tips and tricks, you can master it and achieve good results.

Preparation for work

Before you master step-by-step master class oil painting for beginners, you need to choose the right tools and materials for work. The quality and attractiveness of your picture will depend on this.

Choice of paints

To start preparing for drawing, you should choose colors. Thanks to them, you can emphasize individual details of the picture and give it a complete look. For their work, artists use the following types of paints:

Gouache and watercolor are used for graphics, and oil, acrylic, tempera are used for painting. For beginners, it is best to use oil paints. They can be found easily in specialized stores and are also easier to work with.

There is no generally accepted technique for painting with oil. Each artist chooses his own style, which he follows in the process of creating all the paintings. Oil paints can be applied both pasty (undiluted paint) and liquid (with the addition of a solvent). By practicing with different application techniques, you can find the best and most convenient method for you.

Since the 15th century, painters around the world began to use various oils (walnut, linseed, poppy) as binders. For example, the famous Dutch painter Peter Paul Rubens used oils that were previously thickened and bleached by the sun, as well as resins that made his paint viscous. Thanks to this, they dried very quickly and had good adhesion to the canvas. Among Russian artists (Venetsianov, Rublev, Repin, Bryullov, Korovin), pictorial varnishes made from various resins were especially popular.

Most of the oils used practically do not change the color of the paint. At the same time, they dry out for a very long time and, hardening, form a fragile film. Because of this, paintings painted with such paints require additional processing and maintenance.

The best option for beginners is to use flaxseed oil as a binder. The paint with its addition dries rather quickly and does not require additional processing. Its only drawback is that when it dries, it gives the paint a light brown tint. To get rid of this unwanted change, artificial clarifiers are used.

When buying oil paints, first of all pay attention to their expiration date. If it is already out or running out, then abandon the purchase or look for more "fresh" materials.

Oil paints are available in a wide variety of colors. A newbie in this business should not buy all of them. It is enough to acquire basic colors and learn how to work with them. Having received certain skills, you can always buy the missing shade of paint. Oil paints are produced by many companies, so their price varies in a very wide range. If you are just taking the first steps in mastering painting, then it is best to abandon expensive options and give preference to simpler and cheaper ones.

Purchase of solvents

The choice of solvent is also very important in preparation for work. The wrong material can ruin your paints and render them unusable. Most often used for diluting paints:

Preparation of the base

Before starting to study a master class in oil painting for beginners, you should correctly select and prepare a base on which the paint will be applied. Work can be performed on such surfaces:

  • canvas;
  • tree;
  • glass;
  • cardboard;
  • metal;
  • paper.

Any of these bases must be primed first. This is necessary in order for the paints to better adhere to the surface and adhere to it. And also the primer prevents cracking and shrinkage of the applied paint layer.

Selected and prepared canvases are stretched on a stretcher (wooden frame) or attached to thick cardboard. An important criterion when choosing a canvas for work is its graininess. If you are going to apply paints pasty, then the best option for you will be a coarse-grained surface, if "thin" - a canvas with a fine grain. For beginners, it is best to choose something in between, and then proceed from your preferences.

You can buy a ready-made base at any store that specializes in selling goods for painting. The cheapest option is primed cardboard. It and other types of bases can not only be purchased in the store, but also ordered on the Internet.

Brushes and palette knives

For a full study of the oil painting master class, you need to prepare brushes. They are made from bristles, natural bristles or synthetics. According to their form, they are divided into:

  1. Flat. These brushes are used by artists to paint in large strokes on large areas of the canvas.
  2. Round brushes. They are necessary for drawing small parts of the image.
  3. Fan-shaped. These brushes are ideal for creating smooth color transitions.

You can find brushes in any specialty store or department. Their price directly depends on the quality of manufacture and the high cost of the material used. For beginners, the simplest options are suitable. With proper care, they can last you more than one month.

In order to prolong their service life, it is necessary to wash them after each use. First, they are washed with any solvent, and then washed with ordinary soap. If the paint on the brush has already dried, then it should be placed in a container with turpentine and held there for several minutes. After that, she is washed with solvent and laundry soap. Clean brushes are dried horizontally or vertically.

In the process of studying drawing an oil painting for beginners, the following types of brushes are used in stages:

  1. Synthetic brush for fine detailing.
  2. Fan-shaped pony hair brush for smooth color transitions.
  3. Several flat brushes.

Palette knives are tools that are used to mix paints and fix defects. For beginners, the best option would be to buy a diamond-shaped painting tool and a rounded one for a palette.

Palette and workplace

The palette is designed for mixing paints of different colors. You can easily find this item in any art store or make yourself from a piece of plastic or glass. After each use, the palette must be cleaned. If you do not want to waste time on this, then you can use any cardboard or cut bag of juice or milk.

To get the most out of your drawing, it is important to choose the right place to work. It is best to paint in natural light. If this is not possible, then you must try to illuminate the work surface as best as possible. Make sure that the lamps do not cast glare on your painting and do not interfere with the creative process.

When choosing a room, you should give preference to those that are as far as possible from the bedroom, playroom of children and animals. The room must be well ventilated, since materials with unpleasant odors are used during work. The room should not be too humid and dusty.

Good afternoon! My name is Anastasia, I am an artist. My master class on drawing with pastels has already been in the community, and now the opportunity has turned up to show another technique, painting with oil paints.
A friend turned to me with a desire to make, as a gift to my mother, a small painting by Camille Corot. My friend is not an artist, she once studied at an art school as a child, but that was a long time ago. As an artist, it seems to me that drawing is easy, and I was sure that the picture would work out. I provided all art materials, and only gave tips. Here's what we got. Not bad for a beginner in my opinion!

Perhaps, more than once walking through the museum, you wondered how all these beautiful old paintings were written, looked at the smears and delicately made details. And probably any beginner can try to make a copy of their favorite painting. After all, earlier, copying drawings and paintings of old masters was one of the main subjects of an art educational institution. I often see that novice draftsmen copy some modern pictures from the Internet that have no artistic value. And the observation and repetition of the old masters educates the taste and the eye of the beginner and will be of much greater benefit.
Today I propose to see how we worked. Maybe someone will learn something new. Let's call our task "Free copy" of a painting by Camille Corot. A free copy, because we removed the images of the figures, as for a novice draftsman, this detail may seem complicated, and because of course, this is not a copy in the full sense of the word!

We need:
1. Thinner
2. Linseed oil (compacted desirable) If the oil is compacted, it will act as a varnish and paint will dry faster.
3. Brushes: Columns, Synthetics, you can take a squirrel, but it's too soft.
4. Palette.
5. Stretcher with canvas. Fine-grained canvas.
6. Oil paints. Here's a sample palette that works for copies.
White titanium
Light ocher
Sienna natural
Olive green
Ultramarine
Burnt bone
Mars brown light or Van dick or natural umber
Red ocher
7. Palette knife or blade. (Not necessary)
8. Mushtabel or any other stick. What it is for, in the photo below. For small work, to make the hand more confident, it is convenient to lean on the drill

And so, the workplace should be comfortable. You can print the picture that you will copy, you can work from the monitor. The monitor is more convenient because you can enlarge any detail.

You can choose any picture, we needed exactly this work... It is even more interesting to take the work that you can see in the local museum, because looking at the picture live you will see many little things that are not visible in the picture.

How to translate a drawing:
1 way. Draw on canvas as you can see. Just not with a graphite pencil, better with a pastel one. The graphite can then migrate through the paint.
Method 2. Print the picture in the correct size. FROM back side sheet, shade the surface with dark pastels, sauce, rub with a cotton swab. Or you can take oil paint and not very thick, paint over the sheet. It turns out a carbon copy. Translate the drawing, the main lines of the branches, the volumes of foliage, you don't need to translate every leaf and pebble, it will still be painted over.

1.

Once the drawing is translated, you can circle it in watercolor.
2.

Making imprimatura. The old masters did not work on white canvases. If you are in a museum, pay attention to the paintings, you can often see the lining there. In different schools of painting, the color of the imprimature was different. For example, the Dutch have reddish, Rubens has olive, some have brownish. In our picture, we decided to make a neutral olive.
We take Light Ocher + White + Burnt Bone., You can add a little olive.

3. Feel free to apply a layer of paint. The drawing must be readable

4. When the imprimature is applied, wait for drying. We have a canvas for about 5 days. We need to be patient.

5. Basic paints on the palette. Dilute the diluent with linseed oil into an oil can 1: 1

6. We begin to work with dark areas.

7. Gradually we gain a lot of foliage.

8. outline the background.

9. enter the color of the sky.

10. Putting the tone of the grass in the foreground.

11. We look at the picture as a whole, without details, as shown in the blurry photograph. And we try to repeat it. The more faithfully you repeat the tonal spots, the better the work will be.

12. When the basic tonal relationships are established, you can carefully work out details, branches, foliage gaps, grass ..

13. don't forget about the drill! Without it, you can smear your painting with your hand.

14. If the picture contains particles of paint, hairs from a brush, then they can be carefully removed with a blade or palette knife.

15. We continue to make details.

16. We decided to finish the job at this stage. Done in two sessions of 4 hours. Not including time for imprimatura and translation of the drawing.

17. Advice on keeping brushes looking good)))
- If you work with a column, synthetics, then it is convenient to wash the brushes in a thinner and then dip them in machine oil. Only machine, it does not dry and the brushes will keep their original shape.
- For other brushes, there is a good old-fashioned way. Wash with laundry soap and wrap in newspaper. The brushes will always maintain an even shoulder blade shape.

Thank you for working with us! And good luck to you!

All people have been trying to draw since childhood. Someone does it well and in the future a person connects his life with art, but someone does not succeed in everything. Everyone at least once in his life has been to a gallery or an exhibition of paintings. And, of course, occasionally there was a desire to take and draw something for myself, just for myself. Today we will tell you where to start our work.

To paint with oil you will need:

1. Stretched canvas;
2. Palette;
3. Pencil 2B;
4. Decorating brush 25 mm;
5. Brushes for working with oil;
6. Oil paints.

Oil paints are sold either in specialty stores or in regular supermarkets. They are of two types: a set, in which several different colors paints or they are sold individually. It is best to buy oil paints individually. Firstly, this way you can replenish your collection due to the fact that you will use some color more often, and some less often. Secondly, if you run out of paint of a particular color, you just need to buy it, and not buy a whole set.

It is best to choose special brushes for working with oil. Pork bristle brushes are most convenient. They are harder and will fit your job perfectly. Better not to experiment or paint with your fingers, it can be dangerous, as oil paints are very toxic.

The palette may also be needed for work. If you plan to paint constantly, then you should buy a special wooden palette. But in principle, glass or a plate can play the role of a palette. The paint on the palette should be squeezed out gradually, from left to right. You should never mix light and dark colors right away. The middle of the palette should remain empty, there we will mix our colors. There are also special whitewash that can be used between paints. Usually a lot of them are spent, so it is better to stock up on them in advance.

Oil painting technique

There are several types of oil painting techniques: a la prima and multi-layered.

A la prima Is a technique that involves quickly applying paints to the canvas. This technique does not require preliminary pencil sketches. We still paint the landscape in oil gradually, but very quickly. If you did not have time to finish your painting, you can finish it the next day, since the paint, by this time, has not yet dried. In this technique it is absolutely not important whether we paint the sky with oil, or paint mountains with oil, or paint water with oil, the main thing is an abundant amount of paint.

Multilayer technique suitable for longer work. This technique involves applying several layers of paint. When we paint nature with oil, we need just such a technique. Since in one painting, you can combine many images and transfer them to the canvas.
We always paint a landscape in oil in stages. Don't grab onto everything at once. First, draw what you want onto the canvas with a pencil. This is done in order to properly distribute ton and paint in the future. After that, it is recommended to apply a primer. In principle, there are canvases already impregnated with soil. The primer itself helps the paint adhere better to the canvas.

LET'S CONSIDER SOME EXAMPLES WHICH YOU CAN TRY TO DRAW WITH OIL:

1. How to paint grass with oil.

This is the easiest place to start. Prepare the necessary paint and paint several shades of green on the palette. Initially, if you doubt your abilities, draw what you want with a pencil. And then, use paints. Apply paint to the canvas smoothly from bottom to top. At the bottom, use a darker paint, on the top, on the contrary, lighter. Work carefully with the brush, do not make too heavy lines, so that they do not turn into a blot.

2. How to paint water with oil.

Water is the next stage, which is more difficult. Try to convey shallow water and depth with shades of colors. This can be done using a lighter blue color, or vice versa a dark blue. Take a canvas and roughly mark on it with a pencil the places where it is deep and where it is shallow. Prepare paint on the palette. Apply paint to the canvas gradually. First, draw an area where it is shallow, use light tones of paint for this, after the depth, dark will come in handy here blue color... Don't forget about color transitions. You can also paint waves with small strokes of white paint.

3. How to paint trees with oil.

First draw the tree on the canvas with a pencil. Try to reproduce tree branches, foliage and contours as naturally as possible. The pencil is very easy to erase and this will allow you to practice before working with paints. Then grab the paint. To begin with, depict the trunk itself, with brown paint, add small stripes in a darker shade, depicting the bark of a tree. Draw the branches in lighter colors. Foliage can be of any color. If the tree is spring, then you can "play" with green shades, but if it is autumn, then yellow, red and green colors are perfect.

4. How to paint grapes with oil.

The drawing of the grapes requires special attention. Before work, study carefully either similar works, or photos with the image of this berry. One of the most difficult elements will be the leaves, which will require special attention. If this is still very difficult for you, just draw berries. Draw the bunches of grapes in pencil. Try to stick to a natural oblong shape. After that, paint over the contours of the berries with darker paints first, paint over the rest of the berry with paint a little lighter. Use white paint or other light colors to paint the highlights.

Most people choose handicrafts or other options as a hobby. artistic creation... Moreover, because of the same mass-produced goods, the demand for hand-made things is increasing. Photos or computer images are printed multiple times. A unique thing you can do by learning how to paint oil paintings. If you watch the video lessons of famous artists, then even a beginner can understand this painting technique.

Even if you try to perfectly repeat your plot twice, you still can't make an exact copy. This creates the uniqueness of works of art. How to start and learn how to create paintings?

Materials that will be required for work:

  • Host.
  • Various paints.
  • Brushes.
  • Thinner and small container for it.
  • Special palette for mixing.

Masters also apply palette knife - special elastic metal shovels with wood handles, which apply paint to the base. It is important for a beginner to master the brush.

In addition, the masters paint on easel or a high-quality sketchbook if they go to work in nature in order to depict oil paintings from life.

Landscapes for beginners is a tricky plot. Better to create paintings using imagination or using photographs. This will make it easier to portray the landscape.

According to professionals, easel work is easier, since it is easier to step back and inspect for the result of the work. At first, you can try to practice on the surface of the table, but it is better to take some kind of board and put it on your chair at a certain angle. You will see an overview of your work and you will be able to assess its quality well, notice your shortcomings in time.

Remember that paints are consumed quickly, so you need to purchase them individually and in large quantities. The release form can be of different sizes. Whitewash leaves the fastest, but black paint is consumed in very small quantities. First you need to decide on plot, and then buy paints of the corresponding colors and shades.

In order to draw an autumn bouquet, you will need one set, and a completely different one for a summer bouquet. In order not to waste your budget on unnecessary colors, it is better to take only the necessary ones in approximately the required amount. All colors and shades can be obtained by having only three main colors (yellow, red, blue) as well as white and black.

Create and select a base step by step

If you want to make drawing easier for yourself, buy from specialized stores ready foundations for work on which you can immediately apply paints. They cost a decent amount of money, but they will suit a beginner just right, as they greatly simplify the work.

Another great option is use of fiberboard... Every man's household has scraps of this material that remains after repairs. It is easy to find it by asking friends, relatives or a loved one. Someone has definitely used it and keeps remnants of this material in the garage.

The shape of the sides of the fiberboard is different, one looks very smooth, and the other is rather rough, remotely similar to a woven structure. Both forms can be used, but more parts and layers of soil should be applied to a rough surface, otherwise the color may become dull, since the paint will sink a little into the structure of such a product.

If you decide for the first time to try to paint a landscape painting in oil, you can take a ready-made fiberboard base with already applied primer. You need to take a small sheet, no more than a landscape one.

If you want to make a base from DPV with your own hands, an easy and inexpensive way is application of simple gelatin, you can add PVA glue to it to make the color white. It is necessary to apply this primer in several layers with preliminary drying of the past. Three times will be enough. You should feel that the surface has changed. After preparing the foundation, you can proceed to creating a picture.

  • Get busy drawing small shapes and details.

Sometimes move away from the picture to evaluate the results of their activities. In the process of painting, mix different shades of colors on the palette. The last step is the decoration of the picture for the frame.
